Slushies!

This particular recipe I received from a friend. Her daughter and my daughter were constantly asking for "Slurpees" from the convenience store.

It became a ritual, one that became rather costly.

So she found this recipe, tried it with the girls and was an instant supermom!

Try it at home with your kids today. Whether it's family night or just a hot summer day, they are sure to enjoy this treat.

1 package of unsweetened Kool-Aid drink mix, any flavor
2 cups of water
1/2 - 3/4 cup sugar
4 cups ice

In a blender, combine Kool-Aid, water and sugar. Blend. Add all the ice and blend. That's it!

Pour into cups, add a straw and enjoy on those hot summer days. Great for mom and dad too.

Variations: For Coca Cola, simply add one can of Coke and enough ice to cover and blend. Or add a scoop of ice cream before pouring in the slushie, yum!

NOTE: It is best to use a blender with an "ice crushing" feature on it. You can buy many different kinds, from the higher priced models to the mid-range and down to the cheapie at Wal-Mart, though I DO NOT recommend the cheapies, they break easily. I use a Krups mid-priced blender and it works beautifully.

While there are many reasons for teaching kids to cook -- less expensive than eating out, preserves family heritage, etc, the most important reason is that by teaching your child to cook, you're giving him a better chance to be a healthy grown-up. Enabling your child with the ability to appreciate freshness and to transform ingredients into tasty foods opens their eyes to making wiser choices about what to eat...
