Crafty Cooking Kits

IMAGE

This week's recipe was submitted to us by 4 year old Zoraya in Kennesaw, Georgia.
Zoraya's Mom says, "This is my daughter's favorite recipe and in fact was created just to match her taste buds. This is the first time she has ever cooked a dish from beginning to end and she was very proud of herself. The whole time she was preparing the dish, she kept adding commentaries as if she were giving a presentation or doing a show. "

Princess Pasta

Tools needed:

Pot to boil water
Pasta Strainer
Cutting board
Cutting knife
This recipe requires the use of kitchen scissors, a knife or blender/food processor. Please be careful when handling sharp objects. Have a grown up around in case you need help. Tablespoon Measurer
Teaspoon Measurer
1/2 Teaspoon Measurer
1/4 Teaspoon Measurer

Ingredients:

4 oz. Thin Spaghetti
2 oz. Black Olives, sliced, drained
1 pint (10 oz) grape tomatoes
14 oz. Artichoke hearts, drained
2 tbsp plus 1/4 tsp Olive Oil
2 tbsp Parmesan Cheese
1/2 tsp plus 1/4 tsp Kosher Salt
This recipe requires cooking on the stove or in the oven. Practice safety around open flame and always use an oven mitt when removing something from the oven. 1 tsp Butter
Pot of Water

Instructions:
First, fill your pot up with water. Then have Mom set the pot to boil on high heat. Next you add a 1/4 teaspoon of salt and 1/4 teaspoon of olive oil to the water. Once the water starts to boil, add the spaghetti. While the pasta is cooking, drain the artichokes, cut them into quarters and set aside or ask Mom to cut them for you. Next, drain the olives and set them aside as well. Then rinse the tomatoes and pat them dry. Season them with salt, if you wish, and then set aside. When the pasta has cooked to the desired tenderness, hold the strainer handle while Mom strains it and then leave the pasta in the pasta strainer. Have Mom remove the pot from the heat so you can add the butter, and once it has melted, add the pasta back to the pot. Have Mom lower the heat to low, and return the pot to the heat. Now add the artichokes, tomatoes and olives. Toss all of the ingredients with parmesan cheese and the remaining salt and olive oil til everything is warmed through. Now it is ready to serve to any Prince or Princess!

Prep time: 20 minutes
Serves: 4

MomsMenu, FamilyCorner, and Crafty Cooking Kits are excited that your children enjoy being in the kitchen. While it is a lot of fun to cook, it is also a big responsibility and caution should be exercised with certain recipes. Whenever there is cooking involved, you will see the red "HOT" button on that particular recipe. Should cutting or chopping be necessary, the orange "SHARP" button will appear. Parents, Please always supervise your children while in the kitchen, never leave your kids alone while cooking, cutting, or handling food. Let’s keep the cooking experience happy and safe!

While there are many reasons for teaching kids to cook -- less expensive than eating out, preserves family heritage, etc, the most important reason is that by teaching your child to cook, you're giving him a better chance to be a healthy grown-up. Enabling your child with the ability to appreciate freshness and to transform ingredients into tasty foods opens their eyes to making wiser choices about what to eat...
