This is a definite no in our schools. They say it's because
the risk of food allergies but I have to wonder if it's really
because of the uncertainties of where the food is being
prepared and what is really going into the food? In my opinion,
you can't be too safe these days.

Still, it does really put a damper on making cookies or cupcakes for
the kids, doesn't it? It's not quite the same to have to go buy these things.

What are your thoughts on this subject?

This is multiple choice in order to answer both question.

We are allowed to send in homemade treats for birthdays. I have always asked a week or more before if there are any food allergies as for years dd1 had a child in her class that was allergic to nuts.

My kids' school doesn't allow ANY treats to be brought in, homemade or bought. The only treats available at school are sold by the PTA or in some other fund-raiser. No birthday treats anymore. They're not doing this because of allergies. They have this thing about sweet treats. No-soda rule is in effect, and kids aren't allowed candy in their lunches either. I think they take it a little too far.

No treats either home made or bought are allowed into class at all. More for the healthy eating programs not allergies but I'm guessing that would play a part. To be honest I'm more scared of what's in some of those lunch boxes than I am to what is brought to class, mostly birthday cakes for us and it was only a few parents who brought in birthday cakes and those were known to make them from scratch anyway, me being one of them.
