I recently got a Rachael Ray cookbook called "365: No Repeats." I enjoy her show and this cookbook has lots of good recipes and good ideas. I like how it encourages you to make your own variations of many of the dishes.
So far the only recipe we have tried in this book is "30-Minute Chicken Under a Brick." It was fantastic. My teenager asked me "can you make this again tomorrow?"

Barbzy; how do you like the cookbook? It is one of my To Get or Read list! I have several new ones on the list, but they are not available at my local libary, so haven't been able to take a peek at any of them.
I also am wanting to know about :
The Loveless Cafe by Jane Michael Stern
Sylvia's Family Soul Food Cookbook by Sylvia Woods
Vegetarian Suppers by Deborah Madison
If anyone else has seen these or bought them I would be interested in what you thought of them.

Cat lover, I think you'd like it. I have only made the one recipe so far but I tend to "bounce off" cookooks for ideas, rather than just use them for recipes. I like to pick up new ways to cook stuff by reading the cookbook. Knowing that you need to use very healthy recipes, I think this would be a good cookbook for you.

Thanks! I really wasn't aware that she cooks that way. I've never even seen her show, just some commercials for it. Next time we are in Louisville (which will be Monday) I'll have to look it up in the book store if we have time.

I got to the book store and got a new cookbook, but not one I thought I would end up with. I got "Top Secret Recipes Lite!"., by Todd Wilbur. I really like it; it has a lot of restaurant recipes made with less fat and the couple I have tried still taste quite like the original. Good cookbook if you want to "lighten" up recipes!

Here is the ISBN # for Top Secret Recipes Lite! by Todd Wilbur--0-452-28014-1
This will help a bookstore order it for you if they don't have it on their shelves!

I just received my copy of "Low Carb Cooking for Dummies" for cashing in my Points & Prizes points.
It seems like it will have some useful tips in it. :)

That Top Secret Recipes Lite book is available on www.half.com for as little as 99 cents!!
I don't have that one but I have other Top Secret Recipes books and they're very good. I like the Restaurant one; the Cracker Barrel hash-brown clone recipe is delicious.

Cat lover, I always check that site first--unless it's for a gift or I am in a rush. Older books are priced better; newer books usually can be had at a better deal from Barnes & Noble or Amazon with free shipping.

Great information, I also didn't realize you can get free shipping from the other two places! I usually have to wait till we get to Louisville as no book stores near us!

Has anyone seen the "Amish Heritage Cookbook by Beverly Lewis? I haven't been to a bookstore since I saw this listed in a magazine and wondered if anyone has a "review" on it. I thought about maybe ordering it online, but wanted to talk to someone who may have flipped through it first.

I just recently read an article about Phila Hach; she has several cookbooks; one is "Old Timey Recipes & Proverbs to Live By, Volume 1. Has anyone seen or have this cookbook? She has been in the kitchens at Maxim's in Paris, The Ritz in London, and The Sacher in Vienna. I'm thinking her recipes must be wonderful, but since there is no bookstore near me I' m hoping someone out there has seen or have it and can tell me a little about the recipes in it. If I like them I would like to order it. She became a caterer in the 1950's and still does that so the recipes must be good! Anybody?

Cat lover, I got Amish Heritage Cookbook by Beverly Lewis out of my library after you mentioned it as I thought it might be something I would like. It has a lot of those older family-type recipes (not very low-fat or healthy from what I could see) that I usually see in church or community cookbooks. It was fun looking through it, but only had a couple of recipes I'd actually try. So, I guess it depends on what kind of recipes you are looking for whether this would be a good one or not.

Lizzie-boo,since DH has to almost no fat it does make it interesting to cook. I consider it a challenge though to "convert" recipes into a way he can eat them. Of course there are so many that it just can't be done withj, but then I sometimes end up with an interesting recipes all my own by experimenting with some. And yes; some we end up liking and others well no words for some of them! LOL.
dallasalice1, does the Racheal Ray cookbook you mentioned have any listed lower fat recipes in it?
I'll have to see if the libarary has the Beverly Lewis Cookbook you talked about. Out little libaray doesn't have many new books so I may end up taking a peek at a bookstore next time we are in a big city, thanks for the title.

I haven't actually seen any of her cookbooks, but I'd bet you could find copies of her cookbooks relatively cheap on ebay. You can do a search for "Phila Hach recipes" and you'd probably be able to find a few.

Cat lover, have you ever tried ordering cookbooks through half.com (a division of eBay)? I've had good luck and the prices are sometimes incredibly cheap.
I did a search on "Phila Hach" and found 4 books, the prices ranging from $0.75 to $7.99

Lizzie, I hadn't even thought about that. Good idea. I have ordered many a textbook from them. However, just like ebay, you need to make sure the person selling it has a good background and, as with anything with ebay, you can get something really terrific or something not so terrific.

DeBora, I know what you mean about eBay purchases. I have been mostly buying (with a few sales) on eBay for several years, and most of the transactions have been really positive. You're right about checking feedback. The other thing to check before bidding (or purchasing on half.com) is the shipping cost. I have found that most sellers are reasonable, but occasionally, an item will be listed at a low starting price and they really sock it to you on the shipping.

This one isn't new per se but I liked it for its simplicity. It's called "A Man, A Can and a Plan", a ***ist title for sure but a cool concept. It's a board book cookbook which has simple recipes in which it has pictures of the items to buy at the store. For example it shows you a picture of Campbell's Tomato Soup is you need it for the recipe. It's great to use with children who are just getting interested in cooking!

My absolute favorite cookbook and one I use constantly is from the Dean and Diluca foodstore in Manhattan. They've got a website but you can also get the book discounted through Amazon, etc.
It's only for entrees and side dishes for the most part, but there are fabulous recipes for the best chicken pot pie and meatloaf I've ever come across. So good that I serve the meatloaf at dinner parties and get rave reviews. Who would think meatloaf could accomplish that!

vicki2, care to share the meatloaf recipe over on the Main Meals Meats? I'd sure like to try it and I'm sure others would!

You know, you can find cookbooks for just about everything. I homeschool and am doing a unit study wtih my son about "The Chronicles of Narnia" series. Did you know there was a "Narnia" cookbook? Yep, I had to drive over an hour to find one in a library, but there is one. I never would have known if I wasn't doing this study. It has some interesting recipes in it. My son wants to try a few soon.

Did anyone else get new cookbooks for Christmas?
I got 2...a Campbell's Soup cookbook, and Paula Deen's Christmas cookbook. That one is more of a "reading" cookbook as it has a lot of stories and tales about family traditions as well as some yummy-looking recipes.

I didn't get any. This is probably because I am too busy to cook until I finish school. I've been wanting mario Batali's, "Mario Tailgates NASCAR Style" cookbook. He advertised it at one of the races and I've been wanting it ever since. I am so suggestible.
Barb, does Paula's cookbook have a lot of dessert or sweets type recipes? It seems like she cooks a lot of those.

I didn't get any new cookbooks this year, but I do have the first two of Paula's cookbooks and her Celebrate book. They have some sweets but a balance of other kinds of things too. (Although always lots of butter!)
She does have one book that is just desserts, but I didn't get that one either as we shouldn't have as many sweets as we already do!
I may have to treat myself to a new cookbook -- maybe I'll use the kitchen store giftcard I got for Christmas. Hmmmm, better start thinking about that.

No cookbooks; really didn't even have Christmas this year with all that has been going on. Delivered al our gifts to the boys early December and they had places to go on Christmas. Didn't go to DH's family party for the "get together". Just a day that we stayed home and warm inside! LOL
But... I'll be looking for some of those new recipes here!

I picked up a "good to read" cookbook at the library the other day. Cooking with My Sisters by Adriana Trigiani. There's a lot of reminiscing and plenty of STEP BY STEP on how to make pasta, sauces and many traditional Italian dishes.

Sounds like my kind of cookbook. If you know the name of the cookbook you can check on Amazon for the 2nd hand books. The shipping was $3.50 last time I ordered a paperback but the book was only a dime. I have found some real steals there. I love reading cookbooks of any kind

cat lover,
I've been to a couple of half price bookstores that had cookbooks. The ones I visited had older books, but there are a lot of gems out there that were published years ago too.
