When you cook, do you prefer to cook solo? Do you like having others in the kitchen, either helping you or chatting with you?

When you cook, do you prefer to cook solo? Do you like having others in the kitchen, either helping you or chatting with you? I like to cook alone most of the time, especially if Im having a big planned event. Im a bit of a control freak in this area because I like to time things out and plan things to be right on schedule. ;)

Since I like to cook alone, I have a hard time allowing my son to work in the kitchen. I am getting better at it---at least Im trying. He likes to help cook and jumps at the chance so Im trying to back down from thinking that it is just easier for me to do it and let him try his hand at different things.
Barbszy, Do your kids help you cook?

I usually don't let my kids help me cook. Our kitchen is SMALL and I feel crowded in there when other people are in there.
However, I do need to start teaching my 2 older kids (14 and 10) the skill of cooking so they can learn to be self-sufficient when they're adults. So once a week I'll have "kids cook" night, once summer vacation starts.

I have been thinking of trying something like that with my son too. I think that he would like the planning and cooking part but the cleaning up, Im sure it wont go over very well. LOL!

I like having someone to chat with while I cook. That is why I have my family room and my kitchen in the same large area. That way we can all visit while I cook!

I also like having someone in to chat with while working in the kitchen. I was always in the kitchen with my beloved Mom and G-Mom (otherwise most likely I would not do as well as I do now lol) My now 17 yr old G-son likes to try his hand at things now and then and I let him. Seven yr old Steven also likes to help me especially when it is baking cookies, he is a great "tester" too.

Mostly I cook alone because my kitchen is small,so it hard to move with more than one person in it. I try to get my daughter to help sometime as she is 14 and gives her a chance to learn new dishes.

my dd and I share cooking duty, sometimes we cook together and it's usually OK-she does what I don't like to do (peel potatoes) and I do other duties. I usually make pizza alone and meatloaf, but we take turns with spaghetti and stews (we make things a bit differently, I add garlic and onions to just about everything and she doesn't , especially the onions) LOL

I enjoy having some help in the kitchen, but with it just being hubby and me now ;well, he doesn't cook! He can make do if he had to, but prefers not to be in the kitchen.
Whne we built our log home I designed the great room, dining room and kitchen to be all one big room. It is 40 x 20 and that way he is usually within sight and we can talk while I cook. Once in a while he will help when I ask , but he doesn't like doing that much. Yearas ago when I worked second shift in a nursing home he cooked all the suppers for him and the boys as long as I left a menu with detailed instructions. Now I figure it helps his brain injury to concentrate on working with a recipe and following the instructions, but he still needs help!
