Marshmallow Ghosts (Candy)
Marshmallows
4" lollipop sticks
Melting chocolate (your color choice)
Black decorating gel
Stick marshmallows into 4" lollipop sticks and place them in the freezer for about 15 minutes, until they are cold.
While the marshmallows are chilling, melt the chocolate in a double boiler or in the microwave.
Remove the marshmallows from the freezer and dip them lightly in the melted chocolate for a thin coating. To get a mummy look, swirl them a bit to look like layers of white wrapped around it. Ghosts should be dunked to make a little twisted peak on top. Frankenstein can be dunked and a spoon used to flatten the chocolate on top.
Push the sticks into a block of styrofoam to cool. If you stick them in the fridge it shouldn't take long for them to set up.
Add faces after they harden. Using a small tube of black decorating gel, with a small tip, carefully paint on two ghostly eyes onto the marshmallow. Add a little mouth as well.

FREAKY FINGER FOOD
Makes about 18 decrepit digits.
1 c. flour
2 T. cornstarch
1/8 t. salt
1/2 c. unsalted butter, softened
1/2 c. confectioners' sugar, sifted
1/2 t. vanilla
1/3 c. very finely chopped pecans
1/3 c. medium-coarse pecans
1/4 c. sliced almonds
Preheat oven to 350F. Sift the flour and place it in a small mixing bowl. Add the cornstarch and salt. Stir together with a fork and set aside. Place butter in a large mixing bowl and cream with an electric mixer. Sift in the sugar. Mix together until batter is fluffy. Add vanilla and pecans and blend well. Now slowly pour the flour mixture into the butter mixture, and combine until dough appears crumbly. Place a piece of waxed paper about 12 inches long onto a smooth work surface. Place the dough on top of the waxed paper, then cover it with another piece of waxed paper about the same size. With a rolling pin, roll out the dough to 1/4 inch thick and slowly remove the top piece of paper. Slice the dough with a butter knife into oblong shapes about the width of your middle finger. Use a metal spatula to lift the fingers onto an ungreased cookie sheet, making sure you leave about 1 inch in between each finger. To give fingers an old and knotted appearance, bend some of them sideways at the knuckles. Use slivered almonds for each fingernail. Place baking sheet in the oven for 12 to 15 minutes. Then remove with potholders and transfer the cookies with the metal spatula to a wire rack to cool.

CRISPY CATERPILLAR COCOONS
1 8-oz. tube refrigerated crescent rolls
8 beef sausages (such as Brown & Serve)
1 squeeze bottle yellow mustard
Preheat oven according to directions on the crescent-roll package.
Prepare the sausages according to the directions on the package.
Use tongs to remove the cooked sausages from the frying pan and place them on paper towels.
Allow to cool ten to fifteen minutes.

Then use the rounded tip of a carrot peeler to scoop out a long, shallow trough down the length of each half.
Squeeze a thin line of mustard into each trough.
Separate the crescent-roll dough into its pre-cut triangle pieces, and lay them flat on an ungreased cookie sheet.
To form insect larvae, take two sausage halves and, with their mustard-filled sides touching, put them together to form a whole.
Place a whole larva at the wide end of each dough triangle, and roll up dough as you would regular crescent rolls.
Pinch the ends and seams of the rolls closed.

Kitty Litter Cake for Halloween
Despite the cake's appearance, it's really delicious. For the proper presentation, use a brand new (and definitely UNUSED) plastic cat litter box and spoon it onto plates with a new (NEVER EVER used) pooper scooper.
1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 white cake mix
2 large pkg vanilla instant pudding mix, prepared
1 large pkg vanilla sandwich cookies
green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls®
1 new kitty litter pan
1 new plastic kitty litter pan liner
1 new pooper scooper
Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans).
Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.
Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup. To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix until completely colored.
When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. Important: mix in just enough of the pudding to moisten it. You don't want it too soggy. Combine gently.
Line a new, clean kitty litter box. Put the cake/pudding/cookie mixture into the litter box.
Put three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable. Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls bury them in the mixture. Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top. Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly on top of everything -- this is supposed to look like mold in kitty litter.
Heat 3 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until almost melted. Scrape them on top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs. Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top; take one and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs. Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around for a truly disgusting effect.

Don't throw away those pumpkin seeds; they make a really good snack!

2 tsp.olive oil
salt to taste
(You can also add one of these for a change of taste)
garlic powder
seasoning salt
Cajun seasoning blend
Preheat oven to 300. Clean off the major part of the sr=trings and pulp from the seeds; if you leave a little its no problem.Toss pumpkin seeds in a bowl with the oil and seasonings. Spread pumpkin seeds in a single layer on baking sheet. Bake for about 45 minutes, stirring occasionally till golden brown.
Do you need to rinse & dry the seeds first?

Have you seen the recipes that have been in the newsletters the past couple of weeks? My kids think they're a riot! :D
First it was "severed finger cookies" and now it's "snot on a pretzel." That last one is SO funny--and gross--I almost wish I were feeding some teenagers soon, so I could serve it!
Oh yeah! I loved that snot on a pretzel one.
My Halloween party is on the 29th and we are having:
Dead Man (and Woman) Meatloaf
Deviled Mice Eggs
Severed Finger Cookies
Spooky Brownies
Day Old Bathwater Punch
The rest of the menu is just normal stuff.

I offered to make the "snot on a pretzel" for DD's homeroom Halloween party. I know at least, the boys will eat it! Big DS thinks it would taste good, so I'll have to make extra for him.
Maybe for the less-courageous I'll do some chocolate-dipped pretzels with sprinkles.

Catlover, thanks for the recipes. They seem easy enough. I will try them ahead of time.
Barbszy, yes I've seen the recipes in the newsletters. I really want to make the snot on a stick, I think my grandkids would love it, but mt own kids (in their 30's) would probably say Gross, Mom. LOL
Now I'm talked into it.
Thanks.

I am planning on making a poke cake using white cake, orange Jello and tinting white canned frosting orange. I love the idea of candy corn to decorate the cake but my DD is the only one who really likes candy corn. lol. Maybe I can find some Halloween sprinkles. This will probaby double as my son's BD cake. We will be celebrating his birthday/Halloween on Friday....and then all weekend. ;)

Chocolate Hair
3 large shredded wheat bundles
3 tbsp honey
1 tbsp light brown sugar
1 6oz bag milk chocolate chips
2 tbsp margarine
Break up shredded wheat bundles into single long strands, so that they have the appearance of hair. Set aside.Place the honey, brown sugar, chocolate chips, and butter in a medium sized heavy saucepan and heat over low to melt. Gently stir mixture with a rubber spatula. Mixture should be smooth and glossy. Remove the saucepan from burner and place it on a heat safe work surface. Gently fold in shredded wheat. When the shredded wheat is completely coated, scoop it onto wax paper in nine equal portions. Use a fork to gently rake "hairs" into one direction. To set Chocolate Hair, place them in refrigerator for about thirty minutes. If there are any hairy bundles left over, keep them stored in the refrigerator. 9 servings

I absolutely have to do the snot pretzels.
I love the idea of the poke cake but DD#2 will be doing cupcakes.......
The chocolate hair looks easy.
I'm probably a real stinker, but I kind of want to gross the kids out.
I'm always pulling pranks on the at unexpected times. Like Christmas. etc.

Green Lagoon Punch
Purple hands floating in a neon green punch!
1 1/2 cups water
4 to 5 drops Purple neon food color
Clear clean diposable vinyl glove (non powdered)
twist-tie
1 bottle (2 liters) lemon lime soda, chilled
1 can (12 oz) frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed
1/4 teaspoon green neonfFood colors
To make the hand, mix 1 1/2 cups water and 4 to 5 drops purple neon food color. Pour into glove and secure with twist tie. Place in resealable plastic bag and seal bag (to prevent possible leaks). Freeze 8 hours or overnight till solid. Just before serving, mix soda, lemonade concentrate and green neon food color in punch bowl.To serve, float hand in punch bowl. The glove may be removed from the ice hand, but I find it easier to just leave it on, but if you do remove it the the purple color will blend with the green punch; so it all depends on the effect you want. 10 -1 cup servings

Isn't there a special kind of glove that is safe around food? I don't mind grossing them out, but I'd hate to poison them.LOL
You have given me so much help on my menu, and I'm really thankful. I'll let you know which dishes went over best. I'll be making up the snack treats today and putting them in an airtight container.
The party is tomorrow night at 4:00, right after school. I'm excited because I have a lot of kids coming. Once people found out about the party, the list started to grow, and grow, and grow.

I buy latex gloves at the medical store (non powdered of course!); they come in all different colors also! Never had a problem with them and I've been topls by several caterers that is what they use. Anybody else have anything different on using gloves in food service and preparation?

Since I dye my hair, I use the gloves that I buy in bulk at Sally's. They don't have powder on them either.

Bubbling Cauldron ****tail
THIS IS STRICTLY AN ALL ADULT DRINK`~~ IT HAS ALCOHOL IN IT. THE ADULTS NEED A PARTY TOO!LOL
In the ghoulish Halloween spirit, the two pear balls garnishing each drink are studded with currants so they resemble eyeballs.
1/2 lemon
2 ripe Bartlett pears
1 tbsp dried currants
1/2 cup pear nectar
One 750-ml bottle Champagne or other sparkling white wine
Fill a medium bowl with water and squeeze the lemon half into it. Peel the pears and add them to the lemon water. Using a small melon baller, scoop out balls from each pear; return the balls to the lemon water. You will need 16 pear balls. Using a toothpick, make a small hole in each pear ball and tuck a currant into each hole. Pour 1 tablespoon of the pear nectar into each of 8 Champagne flutes. Fill the flutes with Champagne. Spear 2 pear "eyeballs" on a toothpick, put in each flute and serve at once. 8 drinks

I saw a competition program on the Foodnetwork the other day. Contestants had to decorate cakes with a Halloween theme and most of the judging had to do with the candy they had decorating the cakes. Most of the candy had to be homemade.
Anyway, one lady made fingers with marzipan. They looked so real. I mean these looked like somebody literally cut people's fingers off and cleaned them up.
I saw the same show....that was wicked good!

Vampire Blood Drink
1 gallon cranberry juice
1 gallon orange juice
1 cup raspberry sorbet
1 quart seltzer
Body Part Ice Cubes, recipe follows
Mix the juices together. Add the sorbet, softened, and stir until it disappears. Add the seltzer. Before serving, chill with the Body Part Cubes of floating face and hands. Pour into glasses and stir with glow stick swizzle sticks.
Body Part Ice Cubes:
12 cups cold water
2 to 3 drops green food coloring
Special Equipment:
1 roll packing tape
1 roll plastic wrap
2 plastic gloves
1 plastic Halloween face mask
Color the cold water with enough green food coloring to make it stand out against the background of the punch. Use packing tape to seal of the eyes, nose and mouth openings of the mask. Line the inside of mask with plastic wrap to prevent leaking. Place it in a bowl that will hold the mask as still as possible while freezing. Fill with the colored water up to the line of the mask, making sure not to spill over if possible. Place bowl in freezer to solidify, at least 24 hours. Fill 2 food service gloves with colored water and twist and knot opening closed to make a tight seal. Freeze gloves for 12 to 24 hours. When frozen, cut plastic gloves off. Take ice out of mask, putting hot water on the outside of the mask, if necessary, to help it come out easily. Carefully float the face and hands in the punch.

Halloween Chili
Substitutions are in parentheses. Best made during the last phase of the moon. If that is not possible, just do the best you can in a candlelit kitchen after dark.
1 1/4 lb ground goblin gizzards (ground beef)
1 medium eye of Cyclops (onion)
15 oz Can soft shelled beetles (chili beans)
28 oz Can blood of bat (V-8 juice)
1/8 t pureed wasp (prepared mustard)
1/4 t common dried weed (oregano)
1 dash of Red-tailed hawk toenails (crushed red pepper)
2 t ground sumac blossom (chili powder)
1 t hemlock (honey)
1/2 c fresh grubs (sliced celery)
1 T eye of Newt (pearled barley)
1 T dried maggots (uncooked rice)
Water from a stagnant pond (or just regular water will do)
Brown the gizzards in an iron cauldron over a fire made from the siding off of a haunted house. A regular pot and stove can work in a pinch.Add chopped eye of cyclops and simmer until the pieces of eye become translucent. Add blood of bat, and soft shelled beetles, and bring to a slow bubbling boil.
Add the common weed, maggots, toenails, sumac, grubs, hemlock, eye of newt and the pureed wasp. As it cooks you may want to adjust the consistency with pond water. You can tell it is done when the eye of newt swells and the vertical tan colored 'cats eye' appears on one side.

Caramel Apples for Crockpot
2 packages (14 oz each) caramels
1/4 cup water
8 medium apples, such as McIntosh, Gala, or Fuji
sticks for apples
In a slow cooker, combine caramels and water. Cover and cook on HIGH for 1 to 1 1/2 hours, or till caramels are melted, stirring frequently. Line a baking pan with buttered wax paper.Wash and dry the apples. Insert a stick into stem end of each apple. Reduce crockpot heat to LOW. Be very careful that you caramel doesn't scorch! Dip apple into hot caramel and turn to coat entire surface. Holding apple above pot, scrape off excess caramel from bottom of apple. Place coated apples on prepared wax paper in pan. As you near the bottom of the pot, use a spoon to spoon hot caramel over apples. Put the pan of coated apples in the refrigerator to set thoroughly. Makes 8 caramel apples.
