DH and I will be spending New Year's Eve at home and I would like to get a good bottle of wine for the night. I'm always looking for a new good tasting wine, I hate to spend money on a bottle and then find it is terrible! Was wondering if anyone here has some suggestions for some wines they like. If you can tell me if it is a sweet or dry wine and any thing else that would help me decide what to get! Thanks!

My personal favorite, which I haven't had in a long time, is Gewürztraminer. It is a German, sweet wine. It is pronounced Gaverstameener. Anyway, if you write the German name and take it to a good wine store, you should be able to get it at a reasonable price. I am not a fan of dry wines, so that is why I like this one.

I will write that one down and check it out, thanks! My favorite one is also a German wine: Schmitt Sohne Riesling! Just looking to expand my tastes! LOL

Gewurztraminer actually originated in Italy's Alto Adige region. Although planted in Germany, it is most associated with France's Alsace region.
It can be dry, semi-sweet or sweet depending on the style of the particular wine maker. Alsace Gewurztraminers are typically dry.

I guess I started liking Gewurztraminer when it won a wine contest in the sweet division. I was told that it was German and it was sweet. I didn't know there were other varieties.
