When you need a new small kitchen appliance, do you opt for the cheaper model or go for the more expensive one?

I tend to buy the more expensive version now. I used to opt for the cheaper toaster or coffee pot, but always ended up replacing it way sooner than I had hoped. I have a BUNN coffee maker. For the non-commercial version, it's about $100, but I've had it for several years and it's still going strong. Same with my blender. I have been through so many blenders over the years, I finally got a good quality (albeit high priced) one that isn't showing the slightest bit of wear. I use it everyday.
Now I need a new vacuum. I go through vacuums about once a year. I WANT a Dyson really bad, but I just don't have the $400 to spend on one :-O so I had to get one for $80.

It ALL depends! I don't mind spending the big bucks for somethiong if it has every feature I want. It is just that now a days I do want things to last, but I've also gotten to the point it better be exactly what I want or I'll keep looking till I find the right features for me. So I look at features first and price last.:)

I want the expensive brand. I want the one that will last longer and be better quality made. However it depends on how much money is sitting in my bank account. I too want a dyson vacuum but can't afford one yet!

Welcome to MomsMenu Fish3711If I haven't told you so before and if I have, well Welcome again! LOL
A have a friend that has a dyson and she LOVES it. I don't as I have no wall to wall, just all hardwood floors with a few scatter rugs so wouldn't pay me to go with one I don't think!

It really depends on how often I plan of using the item. Like my blender, I use regularly so I spent extra but the toaster only gets used maybe 3 times a month so I could go for a cheapie.

Amayesing, welcome to MM. Be sure to introduce yourself at the Welcome (http://www.momsmenu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=252&goto=newpost) thread so others can welcome you as well!
When I guy appliances, I usually get the better name brand as I want it to last a long time. I guess it will be after I am out of college before I get my next good one.
If it's something like a vacuum, the more expensive brands are better. Stuff like a toaster, I go with the cheap. I got my coffeemaker for free through a mail order coffee supplier. All I had to do was buy 2 lbs of coffee for approx. $20 and they sent me a quality coffeemaker. Then I cancelled right away. The coffee was good though

One of my BIL gets new pot from probably the same company you are talking about every year. He really likes the coffee too, but only gets those first two pounds and cancels. He doesn't like the last pot though ; something about the lid where you pour the water in. So I've been waiting to see if they come out with another one any time soon and I may try it. Supposed to be a fairly good pot usually for not too much money.

I'm also picky about my coffee. DH and I have separate coffee makers and separate coffee. I buy mine at specialty coffee stores. My favorite is Jamacan (sp) Blue Mountain. I feel like I am buying drugs as they keep it in a vault in a baggy. This is because it is expensive. I don't get to buy it very often though.

Oh,I bet that coffee is good; where do you get it? I'm the big coffee drinker here, 3 pots a day in the winter! Dh doesn't drink much, but we do the same here. We have two COFFEEPOTS LOL on the counter a his and hers! He can only drink decaf;yuck!!!

Well, guess I won't be trying that one then! LOL
We have his & her coffeepots too. Mine is a one cup coffeemaker. Hubby's is a 12 cup but he usually doesn't make a full pot. Usually 6 cups. He likes strong coffee, I don't. His would make the hair on the back of your neck stand up straight! LOL

I'm glad we aren't the only one to have the his and hers thing going. My DH not only makes his so thick, but he makes it over and over and it gets gross by late morning. He doesn't mind drinking old coffee either as well as using coffee that he's had for awhile. I like Lattes, so I make mine with fresh coffee and drink it right away. I am just picky.

That is funny! I do the same thing; I make a pot and turn off the pot(on the second pot; because the first I drink usually pretty quick) and then reheat if needed in the microwave. I've been known to heat up some that was left from the day before also. DH says I would drink it two days later if it didn't have mold floating on it! But I also make a pot when it is warm weather and turn it off and drink it cold; sometimes with a scoop of ice cream in it. :D

like my coffee machine because it only makes 1 cup at a time. I didn't sleep well last night (dreams about school) so I am popping chocolate covered expresso beans in my mouth to wake up. I haven't fully unpacked yet and don't feel like making coffee.

There are certain appliances that I will spend the money to get the good quality. One of them is roaster ovens--though I think I have all I will need there! LOL! I have 4 in different sizes and use them as mini-ovens or crockpots. I will only buy one brand of these. Anything else, like coffeepots or other small appliances, I will buy what fits my budget, as long as it has the features I want.

That is so funny! Combining the coffee with candy! Now that is a good breakfast! One I could do that is for sure! LOL

I learned the heard way not to eat them while I am in the car in August. I used to be a restaurant manager and had eaten some in the heat of summer in the middle of the summer. I got to work and was walking through the restaurant to make sure all the customers were happy. One of my waitresses advised me to go look at my rump area in the mirror. OMG! It looked like I had the runs! I immeiately ran home and changed clothes before anyone else saw me. LOL It seems that candy and I don't get along well. LOL
OMG DeBora! I would be mortified! I get embarassed when I spill on my shirt. But I suppose, looking back I would laugh a little.

I am normally not shy. I don't get embarrassed if my fly is open and things like that. However, I WAS mortified! When I looked in the mirror, I realized that people probably thought I was ill and would have been afraid to eat there if they'd see it. LOL I can laugh about it now.

I usually buy what I can afford, it usually isn't the more expensive item but it isn't always the least expensive either. I do like to get the features that I want too.
I agree with you trekmom. I will pick out 3 or 4 models, and then pick the two I like best. If I can afford the more expensive of the two, I get it, if not then the cheaper one will do. I look at what appeals to me first, then go from there.
