We like some of what is probably usual for most people; sauerkraut & onions, chili with sour cream and chives, relish with mustard, cheese melted with onion pieces mixed on it, jalapenos and chili peppers with horseradish sauce to name a few of the toppings we use at some time or another.

Another good thing is to score your hot dogs before you cook them and then when you put them onto the bun it gives "little places" for the toppings to lay into. You can also boil them in broth ot tomato soup when you boil them rather then grill them. Gives them a slight additional flavor. In the winter when the boys were small I would cook the hot dogs right in the pan of soup which added some flavor to both.

I have a couple of homemade sauces we have made over the years if you would like me to locate those recipes let me know.

Besides the regular onions, mustard, ketchup, chili, and the like, I LOVE to top mine with BBQ shredded brisket instead of chili.

My favorite is chili cheese dogs. We don't do anything unique or unusual with them.

I like Chili cheese dogs with chopped onions.

I also microwave them on a bun / slit the hotdog down the center before cooking for 45 seconds and then add dill relish and brown mustard.

 When we moved here to NC, I got the shock of my life when my neighbors had us over for a cookout. Everyone here like coleslaw, chili and onions --all at one time. :p

I like onion, Heinz ketchup and yellow mustard or chili and cheese. :D

I like sauerkraut on my hot dog.

Next best is India relish.

Guess I'm not too adventurous when it comes to hot dogs!

Tami, I remember the first time I went to NC. I am not a big fan of Cole slaw anyway, but when I do eat it, I like it a certain way and only with fried chicken or BBQ brisket. But, I'll eat them anyway as long as I get to go to a NASCAR race. lol

Barb, I forgot about the sauerkraut. I like that on hot dogs too. I am pretty adventurous when it comes to hot dogs. I'll try anything once.

What is India relish?

We grew up eating pork or hot dogs and sauerkraut every year for New Years day. Since no one else in my family likes sauerkraut, this is usually the only time that I will eat it now. ;)

Tami, I don't know what's in it. But Heinz makes it; it is a green relish. There is pickle relish and India relish. It's a sweet pickle relish, that's all I know. Yummy on hot dogs!

Mt. Olive brand used to make this, but in the southeast it is no longer available. I think you can still get it in other parts of the country though. Here is a homemade recipe for some; I have not made this recipe so not tested.

India Relish

12 medium cucumbers
2 ripe Tomatoes
2 red bell peppers
1/4 cup pickling Salt
1 cup water
1 t ground cinnamon
1/4 t Ground Cloves
2 tbsp white mustard seeds
6 green tomatoes
2 green bell peppers
2 onions
4 cups vinegar
4 tbsp sugar
1 t turmeric
1/2 tsp ground allspice

Slice cucumbers and green tomatoes andpeel and slice the ripe tomatoes.Seed and chop the peppers, peel and finely chop the onions.
Mix the vegetables with the salt and let stand overnight. Drain the vegetables then add 2 cups of the vinegar and the water, and bring slowly to a boil.Drain again.Mix the sugar, cinnamon, turmeric, cloves and allspice to a smooth paste with a little of the vinegar.Bring the remaining vinegar to a boil, stir in the paste, and add the white mustard seeds and the vegetables.
Bring to a boil and cook for 20 minutes, stirring constantly. Turn into hot jars and seal.
Makes 8 Pints.

For years, I've made a hashbrown casserole. In fact I've posted the recipe here before.

Last week, my daughter said "mom let's try it with cut up hot dogs in it" It was great. So while not a topping, it is another way to use hot dogs.

A couple of new ideas I found going through some cookbooks I'm disposing of and I thought these would be a nice change of pace for the next hot dog cookout.

Dilled Mustard

1/3 cup prepared mustard (I'm going to use the yellow salad style)
2 tbsp finely chopped onion
2 tbsp chopped fresh dill OR 1/2 tsp dried dill
Combine all ingredients

This one is a cooked topping, but would be great on the grill with them:

Vegetable Relish

1/4 cup green bell pepper cut into 1 x 1/4" strips
1/4 cup red bell pepper cut into 1 x 1/4" strips
1/2 cup onion, chopped
2 tbsp butter
1 tsp chopped fresh garlic

Put these ingredients into a foil packet and close; grill about 5 to 10 minutes.

Making me hungry right now! lol
