This is a recipe from my grandmother's files. I haven't made it is years, but from what I remember it is good. Hope this is what you were looking for, if not let me know I'm sure I have others in my files!
Cucumber Relish
1 quart vinegar
12 medium cucumbers
12 medium onions
3 cups sugar
1/2 cup flour
1 tsp tumeric
1/3 cup salt
1 tbsp dry mustard
1 tbsp celery seed
1 tbsp red pepper
Put onions through a food chopper on a coarse grind. Peel cucumbers and slice into quarters.Slice crosswise nto 1/2" pieces and cover with water. Add 1/3 cup salt and let stand overnight. Drain but don't wash. Mix remaining ingredients and add to cucumbers and cook in a larege open pot. Boil hard 15 minutes. Seal in jars while hot.
Let me know if you want something different.

Here is another good relish recipe; and this one is a "chopped" relish. Recipe is from the "Ball Blue Book"
CUCUMBER RELISH
2 qts chopped cucumbers (about 4 large)
2 cups chopped sweet red peppers
2 cups chopped sweet green peppers (about 4 medium)
1 cup chopped onion
1 qt vinegar
1 tbsp turmeric
1/2 cup salt
1 tbsp mustard seed
2 tsp whole cloves
2 tsp whole allspice
2 sticks cinnamon
1 1/2 cups brown sugar
Combine cucumbers, peppers and onions and sprinkle with turmeric. Dissolve salt in 2 qts. cold water and pour over vegetables, let stand 3 to 4 hours. Drain and cover vegetables with cold water and let stand 1 hour. Drain thoroughly. Tie spices in a cheesecloth bag; add to sugar and vinegar. Heat to boiling and pour over vegetables. Cover and let stand 12 to 18 hours in a cool place. Simmer till vegetables are hot. Bring to boiling. Pack boiling hot into hot jars, leaving 1/8" head space. Adjust caps. {rocess 10 minutes. Makes about 6 pints

I've never made relish. I always buy it. A little bit of pickle relish juice in macaroni salad gives it a wonderful taste and people always want to know what the "secret" ingredient is.

It isn't necessarily less expensive to make your own unless you already have the needed tools, but if you do and have a garden growing the produce you need also it is great! And every time you use it you know what is in it! LOL
