I use this a lot in recipes that orginally called for ground beef.Textured or texturized vegetable protein (TVP), also known as textured soy protein (TSP) is a meat substitute made from defatted soy flour, a by-product of making soybean oil. It is quick to cook, high in protein, and low in fat. Have you ever tried it? I've had people eat recipes with it in it and not even know till I tell them there is no ground meat in what theyare eating. If you have some I would love for you to share them here. Here are some I have used:
Mexican Pizza
1 onion, chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
2 tsp olive oil
16 oz can fat free refried beans
18 oz jar taco sauce
8 oz can tomato sauce
1 tbsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin
4 oz can green chilies, drained
2 cups frozen soy protein crumbles (TVP)
2 large ready made pizza crusts or your own from scratch crust recipe
4 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
Saute onion and garlic in olive oil till tender. Add beans, taco sauce, tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, green chilies, and soy protein crumbles.Stir well till crumbles are softened. Spread sauce evenly over both pizza crusts. Top with shredded cheese. Bake at 400 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes or till cheese is melted, bubbly, and begins to brown, reversing pans and racks once during cooking time. Serves 10 to 12
Filling for tacos, or use as sloppy joes
4 oz TVP,rehydrated
1 onion, sauteed in 1 tbsp olive oil
1 15 oz can chili hot beans
8 oz tomato sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp chili powder
1/4 tsp cumin
Mix all together, heat and it is ready to use whichever way you desire!
* By adding cooked spaghetti to this you can also turn it into chili!*
