Next month will Black History Month. January 20th is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I love to celebrate by cooking Soul Food in honor of the accomplishments of Black Americans such as Frederick Douglass. Do you serve ever serve soul food and if so, what do you serve? What are your favorites? Do you know any soul food lingo?
If you aren't familiar with what Soul Food is, check out this link (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soul_food) for a further description.

I choose everything except the pie and the cobbler. I am not much of a sweet eater. Cobbler is okay though. I don't like my vegetable sweet, so I am not fond of sweet potato pie or pumpkin pie.
I do like cracklins or pork rinds! Yum! I also like pinto beans with ham hocks or pork salt. I also love beans and rice, fried okra, hush puppies, and I especially love sorghum molasses. I have to keep in the house at all times because my DGD expect me to make her some molasses and peanut butter sandwiches! lol
Am I the only one that knows that the juices in collard greens were called "pot liquor?" Cornbread is good for sopping up the pot liquor juices.

I'll have to go with the fried chicken and the peach cobbler as they are the only 2 that I know of or have tasted. Never thought of them as soul food.

DeBora, I'll have to go along with you on the fried okra, beans and rice, and hushpuppies. Yum my family is from the South, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas and when I was growing up gravy was practially a beverage in our house!! I knew about the pot liquor thing.
Paula Deen on her cooking show had a segment on BBQ with a black family that had a restaurant and they showed how to do greens. It was a pretty good recipe as I remember. My grandma taught me to make Mexican cornbread as well as regular. I add green chilies, corn, onion, mexican spices and cheese. Then you cook it in a pie pan and slice it like a pie.

Ctawna, you are making me hungry! I LOVE Mexican cornbread! I remember the Paula Deen segment. The Black family that ran the restaurant were so friendly and the food looked so good.
Kathy, do they have Soul Food in Australia? I know it is an American thing, but I know of a Soul Food place in the UK, so anything is possible. lol

There aren't too many foods on that list that I have tried. I do get grits when I visit my parents in Florida, but that is about all. However, I love the idea of cooking up some soul food in honor of Black History Month!

I don't recollect seeing anything around that specifically states soul food or not hear of it around here BUT I have heard it on movies and tv shows but it is just a collective soul food thing not specifics.

Kathy, I think it is an American thing. I found some information in case anyone wants to read about it. I think it is just another term for good ol' Southern cooking!
