We bought a Dyson last year at tax time. It was a lot of money but so far, it has been worth the money!
My biggest complaint is that the hose/handle contraption doesn't stretch out very far, making it akward when using the hose.
Other than that, the suction and power is incredible! It is very easy to empty. You can't imagine the gunk in your carpets.
Does anyone else have a favorite?

My favorite vacuum cleaner brand isn't made anymore. It was made my Amway. I loved it because I could do all the repairs myself and it didn't require bags. I wonder if they sell them at the used vacuum cleaner shop? They are light-weight and can be repaired by anyone rather than taking it in to a repairman. I haven't found one that I like since.
I bought a Dirt Devil Vision because of my allergies, no bags. But when you clean the filter when its needed look out.

I didn't want a bagless because I figured that when cleaning it out, I'd aggravate my asthma. We wound up getting an Oreck and it's worked quite well. The little canister vac that you get free with the big vac works great too.

I totally agree with the canister aggravating asthma problems but with our Dyson, you can stick the canister down in the garbage bag and hit a button, the bottom opens up and dumps it out. Nice! On the rare times that I empty it (I gave the job to my DH.....heehee) I still take the garbage bag and canister outside to do it.

I have a Eureka, Whirlwind. It is also bagless but when I empty it I just make sure it is down in the garbage and it doesn't spread the dust and dirt everywhere.

Tami I take it that the vac was a barrel type one not an upright?
I have the upright and love the suction, I also find it easiere to manouvre

I have a Rigid wet dry industrial vac ( more common in a workshop) 5 HP. Since we have a rustic "reused" tongue & groove wood floor we have places that allow stuff to get into the cracks and a regular vac will not work on the floor. I love this one as far as the suction power, it is bagless and is so large it can take up to 3 months or so before it has to be emptied. I wear a dust mask when I tae the barrel out to the copost area and empty it. I believe even if I had any carpet I would probably have this one as it picks up great; better than anything I have ever had. ANd the cord on it s extremely long; I did add a heavy duty extension cord to it though and I can go through the whole house using it from one plug.

Cat lover, my brother-in-law is a mechanic, and in their house he installed a central vac system that he figured out himself. In the basement it hooks up to their Shop-Vac, LOL! It's pretty quiet too since the motor is down below. It works well and my sister says it doesn't bother her asthma.

That sounds great! Especially for the noise factor with the Shop Vac! LOL
