Does anyone use a soy-base milk? If so what brand do you use or whicn one do you prefer & do you use the plain or flavored? About two weeeks ago I bought the great value brand vanilla soy-milk as dh said the regular two percent that I bought was brothering him,I try it & love it myself the others try it for a while but went back to the regular kind.I was also wondering if you use it in cooking would it change the taste on the product. It seems to help me alot & I'm not a big milk drinker but have been drinking this on a regular bases. This wonder if anyone else use & like it.

I have never tried it, but my DS says he LOVES it! I have heard a lot of people say that it tastes better than real milk and it is better for you. Now I am thinking about getting some to try. I am not a milk drinker either.

I have try only the vanilla flavor not sure if I would like the plain. I've heard its suppose to help lower or keep your blood pressure down also it will help if you have trouble with lastose . Thats one reason I orginally got it then decided I like the vanilla taste.I'm thinking of try it when cooking to see if it will have a big difference in my diet.

My DS#2 buys silk brand. He loves the regular and the chocolate flavor. Don't know if he has tried the vanilla yet and I also don't know if he cooks with it. When he was a baby he could only tolerate soy formula and then drank only soy base milks as he was growing up; now he's back on them.

DH got the Silk brand, plain flavored. He said he hated soy, but I got him to try it when I reminded him that the soy that he has had has been in the form of vegetarian meat. He LOVED it as well as myself. It is sweeter than regular milk. DH requested a milkshake, so I made him one tonight. Of course, once he has had his ice cream for the night, he is totally worthless to me. lol

I have been buying Silk vanilla and very vanilla for several years now and that is all I use. But if I cooked with it would use the plains. Have never drank the chocolate as bought it once and it vanished before I even got a taste,

Nell, I am assuming the chocolate soy milk contains sugar. I am not supposed to have sugar. But, when the GKs come visit, I will have to get some chocolate flavor for them.

Here is some info on the soy milks:
Soymilk is nutritionally close to cow's milk, though most soymilk commercially available today is enriched with added vitamins such as vitamin B12. It naturally has about the same amount of protein (but not the same proteins) as cow milk. Natural soy milk contains little digestible calcium as it is bound to the bean's pulp, which is insoluble in a human. To counter this, many manufacturers enrich their products with calcium carbonate available to human digestion. Unlike milk it has little saturated fat and no cholesterol, which many consider to be a benefit. Lower fat varieties, however, contain less protein than cow's milk.
Soymilk is promoted as a healthy alternative to cow's milk for reasons including:
Diabetes management through its ability to control blood sugar levels.Diabetics should be aware that some brands of soy milk even those labled plain or organic are actually sweetened[B]
Source of lecithin and vitamin E
Lacks casein
Safe for people with lactose intolerance or milk allergy
Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are good for the heart.
Contains isoflavones, organic chemicals that may possibly be beneficial to health.

I bought some the very vanilla silk brand soy milk yesterday to try so far I like it but won't drink it to much as it's a little sweet for me.Audrey was the one who wanted to try it as she loves vanilla a lot.Never did get around to using the plain in cooking though will try that the next time I get the plain soy milk.

Nell, I have been afraid to cook with it, even though they say you can cook with it the same way you cook with cow milk. It just seems so sweet to me, even though there is no sugar in it. I'm only talking about the plain soy milk too. If I get bold and try cooking with it, I will let you know if you will do the same.
My DH thought he would hate it since it had soy in it. But, he LOVES it, especially in milkshakes. He said that he wanted me to make him a milkshake tonight. lol

I made potato patties tonight using instant potato's plus I used the soy milk instead of regular milk dh did not notice the difference in fact Audrey & him love them.It was the silk very vanilla soy milk I was afraid it would make them sweet but it really didn't make that much change in the taste. Will try more recipes with the soy milk but will try to use the plain which will be hard as Audrey only likes the vanilla or chocolate and I don't think choclate will work LoL!

Nell, that is neat that nobody noticed. I would have thought it would have been too sweet. I am glad it was a hit!

I too thought it would have a sweeter taste but dh saw me put in the mix & still said it was great & he doesn't like sweet things that much.To me they were some of the best tasting patties I've made!

Sweetnell, I never thought of making potato patties using instant flakes, I just always waited till we had leftover mashed potaoes(which isn't very often--LOL ), did you just make the regular recipe for the instant potatoes or do them differnet? I guess what I asking is did you mnake them thicker for the patties than regular mashed. I was thinking maybe the egg could be left out of mine if I did that.

Cat I make the instant potatos like is on the package then add onion & egg then add just enough flour to make it thick enough to hold togather to fry.Sometimes I add a little shredded cheese.

Your very welcome! Hope they turn out for you as well as they do for me.My Aunt taught me how to make them when I was a teenager, later I tried them out of the instant flakes as I didn't have any leftover mashed potatoes been making like that whenever I get a craving for them & have no real mashed potatoes on hand.

Can't say I'm a fan of soy milk I think it has an after taste that I'm not partial to, I don't even like the flavoured ones my friend said, you can't even taste it with the flavour in it, yuk!
My ds1 loves the stuff so I guess it's a personal taste thing.

If you make smoothies for your family the Silk soy milks are all great! We have used them all for different flavors and my whole family loves them. We have tried the soy milks in puddings, icings and pancakes and it seem to do just fine. The vanilla soy milk in your pancakes is a nice extra touch too. Just kinda gives it a little something extra.

I would use it a an everyday drink and cook with except the cost of it prevents me from doing so!

You are right, it is really expensive. Its cheaper for me with 4 kids to buy that and make my own smoothies than go to the Juice shoppe and get theirs at $4.50 a pop! That is the small price at that, we can't even fathom getting the large! I keep hoping the price of Silk will drop though.:)

It would be nice if the price went down & if they had gallon size of soy milk as dd hits it hard. The last I bought a couple of days ago I didn't even get any as dd drink it all in one day!LoL.Anyway will try to buy some Friday I know I'll get some of it as dd will be gone til Saturday.

To tell the truth I'm glad dd loves it as much as she does because she's a teenager so maybe she drink it more as an adult.Dd & I are the only two that will drink it here as dh &ds won't touch it.I do sneak it in by cooking with it when I can get it to stay around long enough so I can LoL!

I know I tend to have it easier on some things because I grew up on them. of course soy milk wasn't one of them; actually we didn't eat healthy by today standards at all!

I drink soy based milk. My favorite is Silk chocolate soy milk. It always satisfies my chocolate cravings. I haven't tried the vanilla flavor but that is next on my list. I know lots of people use plain soy milk on cereal but I haven't tried that yet.

Soy milk is beginning to have more brands also. I haven't tried them all yet. Wonder if any of the major stores will have "their" own brand which should be less expensive.

Thanks Sweetnell, I wasn't aware there were generics of soy milk out there. I'll have to look for it and see if they offer it near us anywhere.
Hello everyone, yes I haven't posted in a while but hopefully will be here more often now that summer is about over. On the fact of Soy milk, I have been drinking vanilla soy for about 10 yrs and when cooking, I use the non-flavored but I do use the vanilla in my cereal, smoothies and the like! Before moving to Michigan from Indiana, I use to buy the Sun Soy and to me that was the absolute best but cannot find it here...I have on occasion, drank the Continent brand, but not as good as the Silk soy. It is very good for you and even though most expensive, my health is worth that and dh says that if we don't have our health, then what's the sense! I also did not know until reading these posts that helps control blood pressure but must be some truth to that then for I am 63 and my blood pressure is always 110/68 so must be doing it's job, lol. I love soy milk..dh won't even taste it (he drinks 2%) and no one else I know drinks it either, I mean NO ONE!!! Go figure.
All have a great day....I am going to be crafting and on computer all day....dh is a football fanatic...and I do not mind at all!
