I found this recipe but have no idea what "swede" is. Other than it is the road I live on, LOL.
Woolton Pie
Ingredients:

1 lb diced potatoes
1 lb cauliflower
1 lb diced carrots
1 lb diced swede
3 spring onions
1 teaspoon vegetable extract
1 tablespoon oatmeal
A little chopped parsley
Method:
Cook everything together with just enough water to cover, stirring often to prevent it sticking to the pan. Let the mixture cool. Spoon into a pie dish, sprinkle with chopped parsley. Cover with a crust of potatoes or wholemeal pastry. Bake in a moderate oven until golden brown. Serve hot with gravy.

Coll, I tried looking in Wikipedia, and it says that swede is a rutabaga. That sounds like it could be right, huh?

Thanks Liz,

I have no clue, LOL.
I really want to try this recipe. I guess I could ask at the grocery store or even find out if any of my older relatives now what it is.

Hi Coll, From what I found it is a sort of a turnip type vegetable. I don't care for this type of vegetable myself, but alot of people eat turnips. The leaves are edible too & alot of people use them for a salad. I found the info on this page

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rutabaga

I happen to like Rutabagas myself. When they are diced up and cooked, they are very similiar to potatoes. They are probably used in that recipe for a different texture.

I like turnips, too. They have a peppery taste to me.

I would assume that if you didn't want to use the Rutabaga, you could always sub potatoes for it.

Let us know if you try the recipe! :)

I don't care for turnips nor rutabagas myself, but I do put them in stews and such and I really never taste them! They almost will take on the flavor of the recipe when you cook with them that way. I just chop them up like the potatoes and I can never even tell the difference; even looking at them! LOL

I like turnips cooked in ham broth (or chicken/beef broth would surely work just as well) with potatoes. Makes a nice side dish for something different.

Yep, swedes are similar to turnips. They are white, a bit bitter, but good in soups and stews. So that is what rutabaga is. Know I know!
