I got this recipe from my mil. It is great for pot luck dinners.

Clock Watcher Salad

Layer the following ingredients in order given in a 9 X 13 inch pan.

1 head of lettuce torn into bite size pieces
1 cup diced celery
4 sliced hard boiled eggs
1 (10 oz) uncooked frozen peas
½ diced green onion
8 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 cucumber thinly sliced (adding it last helps the topping to slide on the top)

Topping
Mix together 2 cups mayonnaise and 2 tablespoon sugar. Spread over salad and refrigerate 8 to 12 hours. Just before serving, sprinkle with grated cheddar cheese.

I'm going to have to try your recipe. My SIL makes one of these salads too and I never can get the "topping" to taste as well. I think yours is different than she does so maybe yours will be the taste I'm looking for!;)

I found that if I make this the night before, the flavors marry and it tastes better. Also, I forgot to mention that you need to cover it with plastic wrap.

You know I talked to my SIL about this recipe and hers and she said the problem I probably have is because I use fat free mayonnaise; she might be right! It does have a different taste!

I've never made it with fat-free mayo. But I also know that it won't taste good if you don't let the flavors marry.

I bet this would look pretty layered in a trifle dish. Do you think that would work?

I usually make mine in a glass dish. It looks fresh and pretty, so I'd guess it would be great in a triffle dish.

I think with a layered salad that the presentation of it in a glass bowl trifle bowl even would be really pretty on the table!

I've never added tomatoes to mine, but I bet if they were added towards the bottom, the red would add color. I want to add that if you put the cucumbers on the top, it makes the mayo topping easier to spread.
