Welcome to MomsMenu Pattie! I too live in a very rural area, grow a lot of our food and raise chickens that we get all our eggs plus some from. We have been "adopted" by several stray cats and dogs. We now have a total of nine, and just gave 4 kittens to a pet store to find good homes~! Hope to see you around here and share recipes! If you have any questions just ask and one of us will get back with you. Welcome aboard!

My name is Amanda, I'm a single mom of one. He's 2 1/2 years old, loves to get into everything at this age, but he also loves to help me in the kitchen!
I came across this website by way of searching for different uses of bagels. I've been trying to find different ways to get my son to try bagels and until now I've discovered a ways for him to enjoy them.
I'm not working, living off of unemployment til I can find something. Not alot here in the south for someone who can type really good and who's only qualified for secretary work. But that's my life in a nutshell. I hope to get to know some of you and be able to share many stories, recipes, and fun memories!

Hi, my name is Stacy!
I was born and raised in the Seattle, Washington area, but 'transplanted' to a small town in Pennsylvania when my hubby and I moved here (he grew up in Maryland, his dad was very ill in 1997 so we moved back here to be close to him - he recovered and is still going strong at 84!). My parents and siblings still live in Washington State, so it's always fun to visit and have them come here to visit us in our fun 1817 farmhouse! We were blessed with a beautiful miracle baby in November 2002 - our Little Princess is truly a joy, and she's the reason I left the Corporate World 3 years ago to be a stay-at-home mommy. While it's tough on our budget, it is so rewarding to be able to see her develop and grow on a daily basis! My wonderful hubby and I have been together for 9 years, he is a Program Manager for the Electronics Engineering Technology program at a technical college in the area (recently promoted from Electronics Instructor, but still teaches some classes and LOVES it). I love to cook, read, and do lots of 'crafty' things... ;) I love to find and try new recipes all the time, and love to read my growing collection of antique, vintage (and not-so-antique and vintage) cookbooks to see what sounds good for the next meal or for entertaining friends. I'm looking forward to really checking out this site and forum(s) and meeting new virtual friends!
Sorry about the novel! :o

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I have a feeling this is going to be a FUN place to 'hang out', not to mention all the cool recipes to try out! I will be posting some of my favorites - learned from my Great Grandmother who LOVED to cook and instilled that in me as a very young child! I'm hoping my daughter will follow suit in the interest of cooking, too!
In answer to Barbszy - I'm in Spring Grove, which is between York and Hanover... I lived in New York for a couple of years and traveled back to PA every weekend to be with my DH - bet I passed your exit MANY times!! ;)

Hi to all. I am mairghread, I am 53, mother of 7 year old twin girls, Dru and Ronnie. I have been reading this site for a while but this is the first time I haver ever posted anything anywhere, so I am just learning.:p
My girls and I have made several of the recipes. Dru particulary loves to cook, she tells me she wants to be a Chef when she is grown. I hope she never looses that attitude. Cooking is a creative outlet for me, as well as it relieves stress.
Anyway hello to everyone.

Hello everyone! Love this website and get lots of great ideas. Live in Wisconsin and we are already experiencing Jan. weather...cold! Love to cook, read, garden, sew, knitting, crocheting, fine needlework. Used to paint and sketch, but it has gone to the wayside in the last 30+ years. Hoping to get back into it. Have a 22 yr. old son and celebrating 13 years of marriage (both 2nd) this month. Looking forward to sharing and gathering ideas from all of you.

Thank you for the great welcome. I'm part of a stitching club nicknamed Stitch and *****. It's a fun group of ladies that i am the youngest. i need to make a dessert this month and have been trying to find an old recipe that uses saltine crackers and egg whites and other stuff in the crust. Later you layer pie filling and cool whip. Does anyone know what all goes in the crust? An old friend called in Heart Medicine. She may have made that up for a curious little girl:).

I have never heard of that, but it does sound interesting. Why don't you start a thread intitled, "ISO Pie crust recipe?" (ISO= in search of). It would probably make it in the newsletter and somebody would hopefully post the recipe and information about it. Let me know if you need any help.

I know I have seen that recipe so I'm on a search! Here are some I've found, maybe one of these is the one you are looking for; if not let me know and I'll keep looking!
Cracker Pie Crust:
Crush unsalted or low salted soda crackers, saltine crackers or water
biscuits and moisten with a LITTLE water or applesauce or a little egg white
just enough to get it to stick together enough to mold into a pie plate.
Fill and sprinkle some of the cracker mixture over the top and bake.
SALTINE CRACKER CRUMB PIE
3 egg whites
1 cup sugar
10 saltines, crushed
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 cup pecans, chopped
1 cup whipping cream
Beat egg whites until stiff. Sift together sugar and baking powder together and fold into egg whites. Add chopped pecans and saltines. Put mixture into a 9 inch pie plate smoothing the top until it comes to the inner edge of the pie plate. Bake at 300 degrees for 1 hour. Pie will not be smooth in applesauce. When completely cool. Cover pie with whipped cream. Refrigerate for 8-9 hours. Before cutting, cut around edges with a sharp knife. From Cooks. com
SALTINE CRACKER PIE
3 egg whites
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup 10 X light brown sugar
20 to 30 crushed saltines
4 tbsp butter, melted and cooled
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 cup pecans, chopped
Beat egg whites until stiff. Add remaining ingredients. Bake 20 minutes at 350 degrees. Top with Dream Whip or ice cream. Makes 1 (9 inch) pie. From Cooks.com
CHERRY SALTINE DESSERT
6 egg whites
2 cup sugar
3/4 tsp cream of tartar
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup chopped nuts
2 cup saltine crackers (crumbled)
1/2 tsp almond extract
Beat stiff 6 egg whites. Gradually add 2 cups sugar, cream of tartar, vanilla and chopped nuts. Fold 2 cups saltine crackers into mixture. Bake 30 minutes, 350 degree oven (don't let it get too brown).
When cool top with 2 envelopes Dream Whip beaten with 1/2 tsp. almond extract added. Put 1/2 Dream Whip on crust, then top with 2 cans cherry pie filling, then top with rest of Dream Whip. Let stand overnight or a few hours.
Hope one of these help!

Been around here for awhile but I just realized I've never posted.
I'm at home with Gia, two years old and Jack is in first grade. The internet is my social life. I never thought I'd hear myself say that.
I've been married for 13 years. (never thought...that either!) It still feels like I'm eighteen. Not physically-just how I regard myself. I've not gotten used to the term -woman-. So I guess I'm just a girl trying to wing it...never got that big Hollywood break so I'm a little dramatic at home to make up for that.
I've been wanting to start a web based business for awhile. I'm very close ....I just can't think of the right name. It's hard!
My husband is a sales rep for a company that prints paperback books. He travels to New England and occasionally we go along. We are able to have vacations we normally wouldn't be able to afford.
We are fixing an old home and hope to sell it this summer. It was a lot more than the 'romantic old home fix up' we read about in romance books in high school. But, it has been an experience to remember. (Our loans will make sure of that!)
At the moment my life is a little surreal; my mom was misdiagnosed with breast cancer in November. After the mass was removed the pathologist informed us it was melanoma. 11 years of cancer free living had ended. Apparantly the original skin cancer from 1995 had spread. Today she begins her first chemotherapy treatment at the MD Anderson Clinic in Houston,TX. And I am hundreds of miles away. If I knew how to use the little faces above I'd put in a very, very sad face.
That tells you a little about me...more than you wanted to know!
If you've had similar experiences...let me know. I hope to benefit from this forum and contribute when I can.
Thanks.
PS How do I learn about abbreviations like DD, DS, Etc?
barbszy
01-23-2007, 05:53 PM
Hi Tilly and welcome to MomsMenu!
Some common abbreviations include:
DH (dear hubby) --or d#$%, depending :D
DD (dear daughter)
DS (dear son)
MIL (mother in law)
FIL (father in law)
YMMV (your mileage may vary)
IMHO (in my humble opinion)
LOL (laughing out loud)
ROFLMBO (rolling on the floor laughing my butt off)
You told us about you, so I will tell you about me. I am a SAHM (stay at home mom) with 3 children ages 15, 11 and almost 5. My husband is a computer programmer and manager, and we live in New Jersey. I enjoy cooking, reading, writing and playing on the Internet. We're also far from family, but only in terms of a couple of hours. But I've "been there" with ill parents, and being far away--my dad as well as my MIL have survived cancer in the past 6 years.

I especially liked the Cub Scout cake--I have one son in Boy Scouts (he's 15, working for Eagle) and another son who'll be starting as a Tiger in another year. I've got a daughter in the middle who loves to bake--I'll have to let her see some of these pictures. Thanks for sharing your link.

Hello all! It looks like I know a lot of you from Family Corner. My name is Mindy. I'm a SAHM of 2 girls, ages 6 & 4. I've been married for almost 11 years, I enjoy playing w/ my dds, reading, knitting, crafting, cooking, & hanging out on Family Corner. My neighbors and I get together once a month for an entree exchange so I'm hoping to find some good, easy, freezeable meals on this site. I also need to increase the variety in my dinners. It seems like we have the same things over & over. I look forward to learning from all of you.

Hello, my name is Janeal and I've been married to my husband Jim for 13 years. I have two boys, 12 and 9. I'm a stay at home mom. I love to cook meals that taste great and have only a few ingredients. I guess my brain balks at those with so many ingredients that it looks like it will take 30 minutes just to assemble the ingredients. I also don't stock fancy ingredients very often, like steak or ricotta cheese, making them more of a treat. Simple and basic, less time in the kitchen for more time with the kids and hubby (when I see him). I also like to do a lot of crochet, cross stitch, and scrapbooking.

They klive in the city about an hour away from where we moved. Hope to see you both around and welcome again!

Enjoy doing many things but my greatest passion is cooking and baking, but besides that, I enjoy gardening; especially growing roses, crafting - painting clay pots and making my own greeting cards and turning junk into treasure.

Hi, everyone! I've been a member of Family Corner for some time now, but honestly didn't know this site was around.
I am in my 30's and I have 2 children, boys, ages 7 and (in a month) 5. I homeschool my kids and am preparing for second grade and kindergarten in the fall.
I also work from home as a transcriptionist. I do corporate or verbatim transcription and it's pretty interesting.
In my spare time I like to read, cross-stitch, sew, and play video games. Yes, my boys got me hooked on things like Sly, Crash Bandicoot, very cartoon-y type of games that don't require a lot of brain power, but it's nice to vegetate for an hour once in a while.

Welcome to MomsMenu toni1937! Glad you joined us here! My Dh and I are both "retired", not by choice; he was in an accident in 2006 that left him with a closed head injury and other injuries and I had to stay at home to care for him. He is 54 and I am 52, so we built our retirement home in the woods on 30 acres we had purchased seveal years before that to one day retire on. Casual living has been a blessing for him as life is much relaxing here. So I have time to cook and do lots of things that I didn't think I would be able to do for quite a few more years.
We talk lots of food here as that is what this forum is all about---food! So looking forward to some of your input also! And Welcome again!

Hi Aerica and welcome to MomsMenu!
I also have "adventurous eaters" and enjoy that. My kids love when I try new recipes. (Mine are 15, 11 and 5).
Have fun sharing your favorite recipes and tips, and I hope you find many here that you can use!
Hello, I am new here. Married almost 4 yrs. I have 4 children, 10 grands and 1 great-grand and 1 step-grand. This is 3rd marriage..first (father of my children) ended in divorce after 17 yrs, second husband of 19 wonderful yrs, passed away of heart attack. Last August, hubby and I retired to a lake home in Michigan...we both love to fish. I have many many hobbies, of course one being baking and cooking. I do quilling (not quilting), beading, crochet, tatting, lace net darning, scrapbooking, sewing, paper twist, and the list continues. I am just now getting into polymer clay. About the only thing I do not do is free hand paint, does not interest me. I also power walk 2-4 miles 5 days a wk, hubby runs 5-8 miles everyday, we bike, eat healthy and of course as I said, summer time my favorite is fishing. I am 62, hubby is 66. I am not to sure if I like retirement because I was a server for over 25 yrs and I miss it terribly.
Thanx for letting me join this forum.

Welcome to MM, Elaine! I look forward to getting to know you better in the future. I can't wait to hear food and cooking ideas from you an recipes. I bet you have some terrific stories from being a server. My DH gets embarrased when we go out to breakfast and I make it a point to tell the restaurant that I do NOT want to receive a certain server wait on us. Her service is so terrible that it ruins our meal. The last time was when I ordered a Mexican steak that is covered with cheese, onion, green chilis, and some other things. She brought me the meal without the sauce! It took me forever to hunt her down to get her to fix it. But then, my meal was cold. I was on the phone to one of my children when she brought it, or I would have caught it before she left. Most of the time, she would forget the ketchup with potatoes and when asked to bring it, she would never come back. So, I imagine that if you like it so much, you much be good at it.

Hello everyone!!
My name is Stephanie, and I am so happy to have found you all. I am the proud mother of 2yo Tristan and am married to a wonderful man named Grant. I currently work fulltime out of our home as a child life specialist in a children's hospital. But, our plan is for me to become a parttime WAHM once we have a second child one day.
I am just really getting into cooking, but am still a bit unsure about it all. Thus, I am hoping to learn from the rest of you!! I really want to enjoy my time in the kitchen more, and can also really use some ideas on creative ways of feeding my toddler (always a challenge)
I look forward to getting to know all of you much better!!
