As kind of an update to my bulk shopping adventure I found a butcher/meat distributor near me who provides large quantities of food for grocery stores and restaurants. They have specials for the public, what they call packages so for $55 I came home with:
5 LB 85% hamburger
5 LB Boneless sirloin steak
5 LB chicken legs/thighs
5LB pork chops
3 LB sliced slab bacon

I am so excited! Our family can eat this for quite nearly a month or more!

Sounds like a good deal! Maybe they run different specials at different times; that would be good also!

There is a butcher shop in my town that offers 3 different packages of meat that usually also included fish and potatoe triangles.

Roberta I would love to find a package that includes fish, it's one thing that I think our family doesn't eat enough of. What's a potato triangle?

One of the processing plants that I shop at also carries some other products they bring in. Fish is one of them; I usually get a 10 pound box of Alaskan Pollack for $17.00. I didn't know they had it till I asked one day. So maybe happy2bg33k if you ask them about fish you might be surprised like I was!

Congrats on your purchase! I knew of a place that did something like this years ago but then I moved and never saw anyone offering anything like it. It's surely a great way to stock up!

That is fantastic! I might need to find a butcher shop in our area who does this. Of course, I need to first get a deep freezer for my garage. My little freezer in my kitchen just can't hold that much!
Meat is so expensive, so I am so happy that you found this terrific deal.

We have an old fridge in our garage and I'm so glad for the extra freezer space that it provides. I've always wanted a regular freezer, though, so I may trade it for that someday. I'd like to be able to take advantage of sales on frozen food and meat and that would be great to own a freezer for those things. :)

Do you ever use or look at Freecycle? I managed to find someone who had a chest freezer they didn't use anymore and it's worked out wonderfully.

Another thought is if you shop around in stores when you are in them; sometimes they will have a scratch and dent sell and sometimes they just mark down ones any time if they a only have one or so. I found a refrigerator for my garage at Home Depot for nearly a $100 off regular price because it has a dent in the door. You have to get down on your hands and knees to find it! LOL I've seen freezers done that way also.

About 60 miles from were I live there is a entire store called "The Scratch and Dent store" and that is all they sell. You might be able to do a search online for one or just start calling around on the phone. Good luck!
