Stephanie, I am with you. I can always go on the Internet and get recipes, but I would rather try some that have been tried by people I know and be able to ask questions to them about their recipes. First, try going to our recipe swap thread for Slowcooker recipes (http://www.momsmenu.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=22).
Since I live in an RV while I go to school, I cook many, many meals in my crockpot since it gets so HOT in the RV in the summer--especially when I cook on the stove or oven. I personally cook a lot of pinto beans and soups and stews in mine. I also cook a lot of roasts and chickens in mine as well. For roast, I just put the roast (pork or beef) and cook on low for about 8 hours. During the last 2-3 hours, I add potatoes and onions, and sometimes carrots. When I first put the roast in, I add salt, pepper, and garlic to the meat. To beef roast, I add a can or two of golden mushroom soup to the roast to make a gravy.
I have cooked with a crockpot for almost 28 years and I don't know what I would do without one. Good luck!
One more thing, I slow smoke a brisket between semesters and then cut it into 3 portions, because they are so big. Then, later, I put the brisket and a little beef broth in the crockpot. After a few hours on low, it is falling apart and has a smoked flavor. You could do the same with a raw brisket as I know many who do. If you want a smoked flavor, add a tablespoon of liquid smoke.

Thank you so much for that thread for slowcooker recipes!!!
With a toddler (and working fulltime out of the home), I think it would be so great to be able to plug in the cooker and go to work. Do they have ones nowadays that you can set to come on at a certain time so it isn't done too early in the day?

Stephanie, you can purchase a cheap electric timer. My DH has one for his coffee maker. He sets the timer for when to turn it on at a certain time and turn it off as well. They plug into an outlet and the electrical gadget plugs into the timer. I hope that helps.

Those timers DeBora is talking about work great! Just a timer like you get for your lights to come on and off while you are away! When I was working I used one on my coffee maker in the morning; that way I had fresh coffee ready when I got up; I was too cheap to buy a programmable coffee maker when the one I had worked fine, just didn't have a timer on it! LOL

Cat lover or DeBora, Would one of you please PM with info on where I can buy one of these timers? Living in my cave as I do (;)), I didn't know that they sold these. I would love my coffee to be waiting for me when I get up!! :)
Thanks!

I PM'd you ajrsmom, but thought others may want that info also! Usually in any hardware store, Kmart, Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. you can get them. They are usually sold for turning your lights on and off while you are away so your house looks lived in. For the coffee maker, crockpot issue one with a single on and off would work great! You can get multiple on and offs, but that isn't neccessary for this use. If that is all you can find it will still work, they just usually cost a little more than the one on and offs. I LOVE finding other uses for things!:D

I put a whole chicken (fully defrosted) into my slow cooker, add 1 cup of water and rub Clubhouse Grilled Chicken spices all over the chicken. Cook on HIGH for 8 hours. It falls off the bones, is quite moist and the family loves it.

Here is what I am having today! It is out of this world good. I got the recipe from Family Corner as it is Abear's recipe. I cook spaghetti and pour the cacciatore over it. Also, since I am not a fan of mushrooms, I use black olives instead.
Crock Pot Chicken Cacciatore
3 pounds chicken, cut up into pieces
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 (6 oz) cans tomato paste
6 oz sliced mushrooms
1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
2-4 cloves garlic, minced
2 teaspoon oregano
1 teaspoon basil
½ teaspoon celery powder
1 teaspoon salt
½ cup dry white wine
3 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
Place onions in bottom of crock pot. Add chicken. Stir together remaining ingredients. Pour over chicken. Cook on low 7 to 9 hours or high for 3 to 4 hours.

This is a staple at our house. My family loves this one
Cheesy Crockpot Chicken
2 lbs boneless skinless chicken breasts
2 cans Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup
1 can Campbell's Condensed Cheddar Cheese Soup
1/4 tsp garlic powder
Place chicken in crockpot. Mix UNDILUTED soups and garlic powder. Pour over chicken. Cover. Cook on low 6-8 hrs or high for 4 hrs.
When the chicken is done. I take it out and cut it up. Add it back to the crockpot. I also add some hot cooked egg noodles to it too.

Here is a good vegetable dish for the crockpot:
Beans & Peppers
4 cups water
1 1/2 cups dry pinto beans
* * * * * * * * * * *
1 16 oz can tomato bits
3/4 cup chopped green bell pepper
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 clove garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
3 slices bacon, cooked crisp & crumbled
In a saucepan bring water and beans to a boil then reduce heat and simmer covered about 1 1/2 hours. (I usually do this the night before so I can assemble the dish the next morning). Drain the beans and reserve 1 1/2 cups of the liquid. Put both into the crockpot and stir in undrained tomatoes,m green pepper, onion, brown sugar, garlic, 1 tsp salt, and the pepper. Cover and cook on LOW heat 12 to 14 hours. Stir and top with crumbled bacon. 6 servings
