WHITE SANGRIA

1 bottle dry white wine
1/2 c. Curacao (or other orange liqueur)
1 lemon, very thinly sliced
1 lime, very thinly sliced
1 orange, very thinly sliced
1 (10 oz) bottle club soda

Mix wine and Curacao. Add fruit slices, cover and chill at least 1 hour.

Just before serving, add ice cubes and club soda.

To mix for a crowd, combine 1 3-liter bottle wine, 2 cups Curacao with 1 liter plus 1 10 oz bottle club soda.

Jazz up white Sangria with kiwi fruit, fresh pear slices, seedless green grapes, Cointreau or Calvados.

Break-The-Bank Sangria

1/2 gal white wine
1/2 gal red wine
1 bottle cognac-type brandy
2 qts club soda, Sprite or 7-Up
1 fruited ice ring (see below)depending on how sweet you like it
Sliced and whole fruit, to taste
(I use sliced: oranges, lemons, limes bananas & kiwi fruit;
and whole: seedless grapes, strawberries and maraschino
cherries!)

Chill all ingredients. Put whole fruit, wine and brandy in large, pretty punch bowl. Float fruit-stacks (see below) on surface. Add fruited ice ring. Just before serving, add the carbonated whatever. Serve and accept the compliments!!

Fruited Ice Ring

In a large round jello mold, alternate maraschino cherries and seedless green grapes. Put in just enough water to almost float fruit (about 3/4 of way up fruit). Freeze for about 2 hours. Lay (small diameter) lime cartwheels all the way around. Put water in until lime ALMOST floats. Freeze for about 2 hours. Add a layer of lemon cartwheels (larger than limes) and more water. Freeze for about 2 hours. Add a layer of orange cartwheels and more water. Freeze for about 2 hours. Fill mold rest of way with water. Freeze overnight.

To unmold, dip BRIEFLY in WARM (not hot) water, turn over, slip ring out and put in punch bowl.

Fruit-Stacks

Peel banana and kiwi fruit. Make thin orange, lemon, lime, banana and kiwi cartwheels. Make a stack by size, with kiwi on top. Put Maraschino cherry on top. Stab a toothpick vertically through the stack to hold it together, and break off top so it won't show (OR use the cute, fluffy-topped wooden ****tail picks - use light ones, or the stacks will get too heavy to float).

Carefully float fruit in Sangria. If you slice stuff too thick, it will be too heavy, and you'll have to make shorter stacks. If you slice it too thin, it won't hold up. 1/4" slices are just about right.

Cheerio!

I never liked Old Fashioneds (although my grandmother loved them) until my XH's uncle made one for me. Then I was hooked! I tried and tried to make them according to various bar guides, and never had any success. Finally, I gave up and called up the uncle. He kindly shared his recipe - it's wonderful! But potent!

"Good" bourbon (Old Fitzgerald, Very Old Fitzgerald, Maker's Mark, Rebel Yell are all good brands)
Simple syrup
Maraschino cherries
Thin orange slices
Angostura bitters

For each ounce bourbon, use 1 to 1 1/2 tsp simple syrup. Mix in an old-fashioned glass. Add one or 2 (or a few!) maraschino cherries and a thin slice or two of orange. A teaspoon of orange juice or so, and a scant drop or two of Angostura bitters. Stir. Add ice. Serve. Lovely!

Simple Syrup
1 c sugar
1/2 c water
Mix in a small sauce pan. Bring to a boil, stirring. Allow to boil for 1-2 minutes. Remove from heat. Cover. Allow to cool. Store in refrigerator in a screw-top glass jar. If it crystalizes, just pour into a pan and reheat until all crystals go away. Repeat cooling process as above.

Those all sound really good, I'll defintely have to try your Old Fashioned!

Here's a punch, that is so smooth you have to remember it has alcohol in it!

1 750 ml. btl. Southern Comfort
6 oz fresh lemon juice
1 6 oz can frozen lemonade
1 6 oz can frozen orange juice
3 liters 7Up OR sprite

Chill ingredients. Mix first 4 ingredients in punch bowl. Add 7Up/ Sprite and add drops of red food color as desired and stir. Float a block of ice and garnish with orange and lemon slices. You can mix the first four ingredients in advance and chill. Then just add the 7Up/ Sprite and ice when ready to serve. Makes 32 4 oz servings

Woo Hoo! That punch is definitely a "keeper!"

We find one drink of an evening is very nice. I tend to like variety, but the ol' curmudgeon currently is fixated on Bloody Marys.

Here's the recipe I use for making them:

3/4 c Clamato Juice
1/2 - 1 jigger vodka (we prefer Stolichnaya or Absolut)
double-dash Worcestershire (we prefer Lea and Perrins)
dash or two Tabasco (if desired)
dash or two Lawry's seasoned salt
dash or two Lawry's lemon pepper
1/2 - 1 tsp lemon juice
short stalk celery (I get the water-pak celery at Publix - just the right length for the glasses)

Put some ice in a short glass (old fashioned, 8oz juice glass, etc)
Add vodka, Worcestershire, Tabasco, salt, pepper, lemon juice and Clamato. Stir with celery stalk and leave stalk in glass. Serve.

I've tried making these in "bulk," but they just don't taste the same. <sigh>

Combine all ingredients in a blender and process till smooth. Chill and serve each topped with a cherry

I make a Pina Colada variation:

One can Bacardi Frozen Pina Colada Mix
1/4 can-full good vodka
1/4 can full Bacardi gold rum
1/4 can-full Myers dark Jamacian rum

Place in a blender, fill with crushed ice, and blend to a "smoothie" consistancy.

It tastes awesome, and everyone wants to know how I make them

In the past, I made my pina colada with half pineapple juice and half cream of coconut. Of course, you add rum if you want it alcoholic.

Has anyone ever had an oyser shooter? I am thinking about trying one when I go near the coast in October.

In a shot glass you put an oyster and then any other stuff, including lemon juice and alcohol and then dump it down. You can make any combination that you want.

I LOVE oysters on the half shell, but I wouldn't recommend eating them after they've been in NM for awhile. They are better if they are fresh like in states near the coast.

DeBora4BobbyL

Maybe it says Corona because it wanted to keep the Mexican flare.

This is one that I've had for awhile that I saw a long time ago on Emeril.

Watermelon Margaritas
1 teaspoon lime zest
1/2 cup water
1/2 cup sugar
3 tablespoons coarse salt
1 lime wedge
1 cup watermelon puree (*see Cook's Note)
2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
1/2 cup premium 100 percent agave tequila
2 tablespoons orange-flavored liqueur (recommended: Grand Marnier or triple sec)
1 cup ice

In a medium saucepan, combine the lime zest, water, and sugar. Bring to a boil over medium heat, and cook, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Remove from the heat. Cool to room temperature and strain out the zest. (Can be made in advance; keep in a covered container in the refrigerator.)
Chill a margarita glass in the freezer for 30 minutes. Place the coarse salt in a shallow dish or saucer. Wet the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and dip the glass into the salt, coating the top edge.
In a ****tail shaker, combine 2 tablespoons of the cooled lime syrup with the watermelon puree, lime juice, tequila, orange-flavored liqueur, and ice. Shake until frothy and well chilled, at least 1 minute. Strain into the prepared glass and garnish with a lime wedge.
*Cook's Note: To make the watermelon puree, remove seeds from fresh watermelon and cut into large chunks. Place in a blender and process until smooth and well pureed.

Buttery Nipples

In a shot glass, pour 1/2 ounce of Bailey's Irish Cream. With a spoon turned upside down, slowly pour 1/2 ounce butterscotch Snapps over the Irish Cream. There should be 2 levels. Drink it in one shot.

These taste like Werther's Original with a kick. Also, if you mess up, as I have done and it doesn't make a pretty 2 layer mix, it still tastes the same.

This is an interesting "party" fix!!! It isn't a "drink" so to say, but classifies as one because of the alcohol; just a fun concoction! LOL

Jello Shots Recipe

1 pkg. any flavor Jello gelatin mix
1 cup of water
1 cup of Vodka or other clear "spirits."

Pour package of Jello mix into bowl. Add 1 cup boiling water. (The alcohol you use will take the place of the cold water.) Stir to dissolve. Stir in 1 cup of vodka. Pour mixture into mold or pan. Freeze till firm. Cut into individual servings. Or use individual disposable shot cups (2 oz. plastic souffle cups) available at party shops and some craft stores. Keep refrigerated until ready to serve.
Tips:

Put the alcohol you plan to use in the freezer to make it cold.
Any clear alcoholic beverage will work if you don't care to use vodka.
Use different colored jello for various occasions or party themes.
Margarita Jell-O Shots: Lime Jello and Tequilla
Screwdriver Jell-O Shots: Orange Jello and Vodka
Daiquiri: Strawberry Jello and Rum
Pina Colada Jell-O Shots: Pineapple Jello and Coconut Rum
Kamikaze Jell-O Shots: Lime Jello, Triple Sec and Vodka

DeBora - Try this! This is my Great-Grandmother's recipe for EggNog

MRS. WHEELER'S EGGNOG SUPREME

This is a recipe from the old days on a Kentucky plantation. I always get raves when I serve this. Over the years I've given this recipe to many people, but they still want me to make it for them. Although it is time-consuming to construct, this is the best eggnog EVER! -- Elizabeth

1 dozen eggs, carefully separated (even a drop of yolk in the whites will keep them from whipping up!)
1 1/2 cup sugar (divided into 3 - 1/2 cup portions)
1 quart heavy whipping cream
1 to 1 2/3 cup good Kentucky straight Bourbon Whiskey (may substitute dark rum if desired) (may use 1/2 Bourbon or rum and 1/2 cognac-type brandy if desired)

All ingredients should be very cold. Whip cold egg yolks until lemon yellow. Slowly add 1/2 c sugar, continuing to whip until sugar is thoroughly mixed in and yolks run off beater sluggishly. More slowly, continue beating and very slowly add the cooled liquor. (Adding it too fast will make the yolks cook and curdle.) Place in refrigerator for about 1 - 2 hours.
With squeaky-clean beaters/whisk in a squeaky-clean bowl, beat cold egg whites until just frothy. Slowly add 1/2 c sugar, continuing to beat until whites are stiff but not dry (soft peak stage).
In a second bowl, whip cold whipping cream until very bubbly. Slowly add 1/2 c sugar, continuing to whip until cream is stiff, but not butter!
Put whipped cream in a large, pretty punch bowl. Carefully fold in egg yolk mixture. When well blended, carefully fold in egg whites. Chill for about 1 hour.
Before serving, gently fold again to take care of any separation.
Garnish with nutmeg and/or mace as desired.
Serve in pretty punch cups with a spoon!! It should be too thick to drink!!

NOTE: As a pattern to increase, use 2-5 eggs, 6 Tbsp sugar, & 1/4-1/3 c. booze for each 1/2 pt. (1 c.) whipping cream. Vary amounts to taste and economic necessity! This can get really expensive to make!!

Cheerio!

Jalapeno Margaritas
Plan ahead for this one!

1 jalapeno, poked with a knife
1 1/3 cups tequila
1 cup orange liqueur
1 cup fresh lime juice (10 limes)
3 tbsp superfine sugar
Kosher salt and ice

In a jar, steep the jalapeno and tequila; keep at room temperature for 3 days. Strain the tequila into a large pitcher and discard the jalapeno. Stir in the orange liqueur, lime juice and sugar. Pour the salt and a small amount of the margarita onto 2 rimmed plates. Dip the rims of 6 glasses into the margarita, then into the salt. Fill each glass with ice, pour in the margarita and serve. Serves 6

How does this taste after brewing in the jalapeno for 3 days. What kind of flavor does it have?

cat lover
08-03-2006, 07:32 PM
It defintely has a jalapeno flavor! With the seeds still being inside the poked jalapeno I guess that is why it is hot. I like more of a mild hot. But the orange liqueur tones it down some too. I'm not a real big fan of margaritas anyway, but I have to taste a drink at least once! LOL To describe the actual flavor..hmmm... different is about all I can say.

I have made these when I have been ill to sweat out the infection. I remember once, a long long time ago, when I had an ear infection, I borrowed lemon juice from one church member, honey from another church member, and the whiskey from my fil. I had just made the toddy and had my blanky ready to wrap myself in, when a church member, who knew what I was making came to visit after church to make sure I was okay. My DH and the kids were still at church and I was home because I had vertical dizziness caused from the infection. Well, as soon as the doorbell rang, I felt my way to the door to answer it. I attempted to open it, but I couldn't because I could see from the dizziness. He laughed and laughed at me and told me I was drunk! (He knew I was dizzy, but he couldn't resist the teasing.) I hadn't even taken a drink yet. What was bad, is I was making brandied fruit for fruit cakes that we were making for charity. So, the next week, I had our minister announce that I needed bakers for the brandied fruit that I had ready. So, he announced to everyone that DeBora had brandy at her house. lol I never lived that down.

Pomegrante Martini
<SNIP>

EEEEeeeeeew! Gin with pomegranite? I just don't think I would like it.

Here's one I just love in the summer:

1 jigger (more or less) raspberry vodka (Absolut is a good brand)
1 tsp lime juice
100% cranberry juice (Oceanspray makes it)

Put vodka and lime juice in glass, add cranberry juice about 3/4 of way up. Add some ice cubes, top with more cranberry juice as needed. Garnish with a lime wedge.

Lucious! I add ice last because it doesn't melt as fast that way and make the drink watery. I've tried using those "fake" ice cubes, but they aren't as cold and don't work as well in my experience.

The Ol' Curmudgeon's Bloody Mary

1 jigger (more or less to taste) good vodka (Absolut or Stolichnya are good)
stalk celery
seasoned salt
seasoned pepper
1 tsp lemon juice
1-2 tsp Worcestershire sauce (to taste)
1-4 dashes Tabasco (optional)
Clamato Juice (this is the secret!)

Put vodka, salt, pepper, worcestershire, lemon juice and Tabasco in glass. Add Clamato to about about 3/4 of way up. Add some ice cubes, top with more Clamato juice as needed. Garnish with the celery.

This is just great!

Cheerio!

Equal amounts Tia Maria and Baileys (to strength you like) with either ice cold milk, or poured in after warming milk. My fave.

It isn't really "cold-cold" here, seldom gets really cold, but it's just chilly, damp and yucky, even though it's partly sunny. I'm hurting and miserable. ~~whine~~
so tonight I'm going to have my version of a hot toddy
double strong tea (very hot)
4 oz 120 proof dark rum
juice 1/2 lemon
"some" sugar
pat of butter

Put rum, lemon and sugar in the tea, stir, float butter on top. Sink into your favorite deep chair, cover yourself with blanket, and sip on the toddy over an hour or two. It really warms you up. Once you are warm, climb into bed with a heating pad.

Cheerio!

Sounds like something I'm ready to curl up with! LOL Hope your Christmas has been wonderful!

Actually, it is not yet Christmas for us old calendar Russian Orthodox! Nativity will be on Jan 7th!! LOL!

We are going to have a family celebration on Jan 12th. I will probably get the boys to make my grandmother's eggnog, but I'll have some other possibilities. Simple things are good, too!

Nativity Brunch Champagne Punch
3 parts orange juice (chilled)
1 part champagne (chilled)

Add champagne to OJ just before serving in champagne glasses.
(Use gingerale for the kiddies)

Hot Spiced Apple Cider
1 gal Apple Juice
6 2" sticks cinnamon
24 cloves
1/4 tsp nutmeg (freshly ground)
2 c orange juice
1 c lemon juice

Put apple juice in a crock pot and heat on high for 2 hours or until steamy. Add rest of ingredients and let it simmer for about 45 minutes. Serve.
Adults may want to add a little white wine (2 Tbs to each cup).

I can start that early in the AM, and let it simmer until the family gets here.

Since it's a brunch, I wouldn't suggest anything stronger.

Ah yeah! Food? I'm fixing a lovely Breakfast Casserole

Elizabeth's Nativity Brunch Casserole

10 eggs
1/4 c milk or cream
1 # pre-cooked bacon
1 pkg refrigerated hash browns (press between paper towels and dry well)
1 1/2 c cheddar cheese, grated
butter
kosher salt & fresh ground pepper

Thaw hash browns
butter large casserole dish
Press hash browns into bottom of dish
Layer cooked bacon on top of hash browns
Whisk 1/4 c milk or cream into the eggs, thoroughly, adding a little Kosher salt and fresh ground pepper and
Pour eggs over the bacon
Sprinkle cheese over the eggs
May be refrigerated overnight or frozen up to 2 days at this point.

Before serving, bring to room temp. Preheat oven to 350degF. Bake 45 min or until eggs are set. Serves 5-6. Make one for each 5-6 people expected. I'm expecting 15, 2 of whom are adolescent males of the "bottomless pit" variety, so I'll make 4!

I'll also have a Honey-Baked Ham

And biscuits - of the frozen variety - not too bad, not great, but adequate, even for this Southern woman brought up on my Grandmother's Kentucky-recipe homemade biscuits!!
