Does anyone have any favorite cookbooks that focus on frugal cooking?
I've learned a lot from Miserly Moms and Miserly Meals by Jonni McCoy.
What are some other good ones? I'm planning a library run soon!

Hmmm, I don;t have any NEW ones that come to mind although several older ones do, but I'm not sure they would be available in the libaray. If you still want the names of them let me know and I'll post them.

Most of my gagillion cookbooks are in Carlsbad. I wonder if you could find anything from Quick Cooking? I am not sure how frugal they are, but they have some terrific recipes.

I like the six o'clock scramble. I got it from the library and after I marked a dozen or so recipes, decided I should buy it.

Cat lover, it doesn't have to be NEW....it still might be "new to me" or someone else here. If you have a favorite, shout it out.
I did order a book today after reading a good review; it's called "Dining on a Dime" and I can't get it at the library. Got a great deal on it though.

DeBora, I do know that I like the author of this cookbook. I have another one by the same author called "Not Just Beans." What I heard about this one is that it has a lot of good tips in it, AND cau on Family Corner (http://www.familycorner.com/forums) told me that the recipes are good for cooks like me who can't ever leave a recipe exactly as written! :D
Now, to wait for the snail mail to bring it to me!

I just checked to see if that cookbook is at my libraries at my university, but it isn't. Sounds interesting.

Now remember; these aren't new! LOL They are from my home library and have been in use for years! A couple that come to mind right now are:
1) Southern Living Cookbook Library~~The Low Cost Cookbook 1972 Oxmoor House Librabry of Congress Catalog # 76-42146
ISBN: 0-8484-0348-0
2) Better Homes and Gardens Good Food On A Budget 1971 Library of Congress Catalog # 71-170878 SBN: 696-00540-9
I gave all the info so if you want you might be able to locate a copy; Good luck!

Well, it isn't exactly a cookbook, it's a mag-style recipe collection from the 60's!! Family Circle put it out - "Great Ground Beef Recipes" (c) 1966 by Family Circle, Inc.
I use nearly any kind of ground meat (venison, pork, veal, beef, buffalo, etc) and the recipes come out very well.
Some of the recipes I use are from The Frugal Cook, By E. Carter, Published 1851. It is available free online through Google Books. HERE (http://books.google.com/books?id=MT4CAAAAQAAJ&dq=frugal+cooking+books&pg=PP16&ots=X3Kjp8ZFJv&sig=DKMnn_-9GvDDOWMW7jUY6sAet3Q&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fsourceid%3Dmozclient%26ie%3Dutf-8%26oe%3Dutf-8%26q%3Dfrugal%2Bcooking%2Bbooks&sa=X&oi=print&ct=result&cd=1) is the link to it.
Better Budgeting's website (http://www.betterbudgeting.com/frugalrecipelist.htm) has a number of free frugal recipes on their site, and a frugal-type cookbook available for purchase. I've tried several of the recipes, but have not purchased the book as yet.
Barbszy mentioned Dining on a Dime. I have it and the Not Just Beans cookbook, too. You can download "Menus on a Dime" from the Living on a Dime (http://www.livingonadime.com/) website (e-book). it has really good frugal menus that reference the recipes in the Not Just Beans and Dining on a Dime cookbooks. There are a lot of other frugal idea books available to purchase or download.
Cheerio!

Thanks Catlover , I will see if my library has them.
ewriggs, thank you also I put the Living on a Dime website in my favorites to check out later. I have Dining on A Dime and it is a good basic cookbook. It has a lot of recipes for doing things from scratch. I need that reminder myself. It is just too easy to get in the habit of using processed foods. We just finished a Science experment comparing my dh who is a diabetic on meds sugar with mt dgd's and my it was a real eyeopener for my dd on how much garbage her dd ate.

Thanks for the websites, Elizabeth!!
I received the Dining on a Dime cookbook on Friday and was checking out all the great tips and recipes in there. I discovered that it's a REALLY expanded edition of "Not Just Beans"--same recipes but more of everything and other categories as well--and it's more than twice the size. So I sold my copy of NJB on half.com and made back almost enough to pay for this new book!

This site has some interesting menus & recipes. I had it several years ago and then it was taken off the internet - something to do with AOL I think. Anyway I happened to find her revised site again and here it is. What do you think?? I had her old site put on a on a CD by my husband from the internet.

Hope you all find it interesting also.

If you can't find those cookbooks on ebay or something, you might consider joining paperbackswap.com. I got a couple of really good cookbooks from there (they were hardcovers, not paperbacks, and weren't "frugal.") You'd be surprised what you can find there. If you haven't checked it out, you might want to. I think you can see what they have before you join.

This is great!! OH, thank you so very much for sharing. I am always looking for new recipes that are easy and delicious. I don't feel 100% comfortable in the kitchen yet, so am hoping that I learn how to just step out of my shell and try out new recipes. I am game!! This site will be a perfect start.

What a great idea this thread is.
I've never heard of the books mentioned above. Now I'll have to check them out. Always looking for new "frugal" recipes.
Thanks everyone.

A newer cookbook I like for frugal recipes is Betty Crocker Bisquick II Cookbook ISBN 0-765-4339-3
If you like cooking with Bisquick this has lots of "all new recipes" doing so.

I really like some of the recipes on the What's Cooking America (http://whatscookingamerica.net/) website. A large number are simple and frugal, but others are not.
I particularly like the scone recipes.

A new cookbook I paged through at the bookstore is " Everything Meals on a Budget Cookbook" When I go to the city next week I plan on trying to stop and purcahse it. It looked like most recipes can be made for around $2.00!

SCONES! Thanks, Elizabeth, I'm there!!
Cat lover, does your library have that cookbook? I just checked mine, but they don't. I did, though, put "The Everything One-Pot Cookbook" on reserve :D

I saw it in one of the bookstores while in the city, our little library locally is years behind getting any books. One of the bigger city libraries may have it, but it is real new so probably not in a library yet. It is available on amazon.com, just type in the name and it should appear. If not let me know and I'll PM you the info.

I found this cookbook at the thrift stoe so not sure it will be available any longer, but worth a try. It is called "The Bean Cookbook" Inside the front page it also says :
North Dakota WIC Program
Division of Maternal and Child Health
North Dakota State Department of Health and Consolidated Laboratories
600 East Boulevard Avenue'Bismark, North Dakota 58505-0200
January 1995
It has a whole wealth of recipes using beans in ways to give you protein in an inexpensive way. I can share the recipes on MM if anyone wants some and can't find the cookbook.
