Help, my bag of granulated sugar is a solid block. other than taking a hammer to it, is there any way to unclump it??

Try putting it in a large plastic bag with some apple wedges. It should absorb the moisture from the apple and soften back up. Use your own judgement as to how much apple to use depending on the amount of sugar. If it is a 5 pound bag, I would slice up an entire apple.

A little more fun way to do this:

Wrap the sugar bag tightly in a plastic bag. Take it outside and drop it on the sidewalk. :D

lol, barbszy that was just too funny!!!

I knew you could do the apple thing with brown sugar, didn't realize it would work on white granulated also. I'll try that. thanks!

Couldn't resist, Barbihttp://smilies.sofrayt.com/%5E/_950/wink.gif

I do that when we buy big bags of ice for parties, and have even broken up a 3-lb box of frozen-solid hot dogs that way. (Amazingly, the hot dogs just separate, and don't break into pieces....) Just make sure your foot's out of the way before dropping heavy frozen things on the floor http://www.vocinelweb.it/faccine/confuse/pag2/60.gif

I've had partial bags get solid, and I used a box grater to "sand" some off, but that might be a big job with a whole bag of sugar.

I would just worry about a small bit each time I was going to use some; that way you can put a small amount in a electric grinder to loosen what you need at that time.

Barbi, what did you end up trying? Did it work?

Makes you appreciate the plastic bags with the zip lock zippers that some sugars come in now! I bought a paper bag of sugar recently and kicked myself after one humid day when it turned into a brick! I'm shaving off what I need until it's gone. Arggh.

I keep my sugar and flour in old pretzel bins with tight-fitting tops. I haven't had a "clumping" problem since I started doing that, and no spills in the cabinet either.
