What do you mean by "open house?" I have cooked for large crowds and even catered. Have you thought about serving a lot of food that can be eaten with the fingers and/or doesn't have to be kept hot unless you have warmers? (I know there is a name for those warmers. LOL) Like bruschettas, pizza bites, Armadillo Eggs (http://www.momsmenu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=93), Deviled Eggs (http://www.momsmenu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96), Tortilla Pinwheels (http://www.momsmenu.com/forums/showthread.php?t=94), various dips and chips, various spreads and crackers, and so on.
I am sure others have much better ideas than this as well as the experience. These types of foods seem to be the easiet to make and eat without having to wash a ton of utensils.
DeBora, I think those warmers are called chafing dishes? Not sure though.
My parents went to an open house a few years ago, the foods were like appetizers/finger foods.
How about wings? Always great with teen boys
cheese and crackers
a bean salad
pasta salads
jello salads
Just a few things I could think of.

That's it!!! I knew if I heard it I would remember it. My GKs are occupying most of my gray matter this week. LOL Also, many finger food can be made ahead of time.

When my boys had their graduation party we had:
Bakery cake
nuts
mints
Ham
Turkey breast
Cheeses
Buns & Bread for sandwiches
Condiments for sandwiches
Pickle tray
Potato Salad (both mayonnasie style & german)
Fruit Salad
Vegetable tray w/dips
Pretzels
Potato chips
Finger style Appetizers
Drink Bar (lemonade, soft drinks, fruit juices)
Beer( for the adults)
We had all the food set up inside buffet style and the drink bar was outside among the tables ( designed to encourage the festivities outside!)\
This way you can do all the work ahead of time and enjoy the party also! Good Luck!

I had forgot about the party mints (http://www.momsmenu.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1256#post1256). I make those for baby showers, weddings, and so on. They are easy to make.
