I went to the Betty Crocker site and entered caramel pudding cake and this was the only recipe that came up; I don't have the magazine you talked about so I don't know if this is what you were looking for or not.
Chocolate-Caramel-Nut Cake
Caramel topping and nuts smother a rich chocolate cake.
Prep Time:15 min
Start to Finish:2 hr 55 min
Makes:16 servings
1 box Betty Crocker® SuperMoist® butter recipe chocolate cake mix
1 box (4-serving size) chocolate instant pudding and pie filling mix
1 cup water
1/2 cup butter or margarine, softened
4 eggs
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/3 cup caramel topping
2 tablespoons chopped nuts
1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F (325degrees F for bundt, dark or nonstick pan). Grease and flour 12-cup fluted tube cake pan or 10x4-inch angel food (tube cake) pan, or spray with baking spray with flour.
2. In large bowl, beat cake mix, pudding mix, water, butter and eggs with electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, then on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in chocolate chips. Pour into pan.
3. Bake 50 to 55 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 15 minutes in pan. Remove from pan to plate. Cool 10 minutes. Prick top of warm cake several times with fork; spread caramel topping over top of cake. Sprinkle with nuts. Cool completely, about 1 hour. Store covered.
High Altitude (3500-6500 ft): No change.
If this isn't it let me know and I'll do some more searches!

no, it's not. but thanks for looking. I've been all over the betty crocker site and several other recipes sites and can't find it. I know you make the batter, put in the pan and pour a water/sugar mix over the top and then bake it.

Does it have a hot caramel runny center that runs out when you cut into it like a hot fudge pudding cake?

I think I found it! This isn't the one out of the magazine, but sounds just like the hot fudge pudding cake except it's caramel; let me know if this one will do it.
