Do you like to watch cooking shows on TV? Do you get recipes from them or just inspiration?
What TV chef do you most like to watch, and why?

This is such a good topic!
I watch the Foodntwork a lot. My absolute favorite is Emeril! I also like Paula Deen and Tyler. There are a few others, but those are my faves!

I love "The Naked Chef", but can't hardly find it any longer. I think it was an old show that they showed on Food Network. He had another show at one time also, but it is hard to find also. His name is Jamie Oliver. Maybe some of you have seen the shows somewhere or know the time they are on! I don't have any other favorites, but enjoy watching other ones from time to time.

I enjoy watching Rachael Ray because I get a lot of good tips from watching her.
Another favorite of mine is Alton Brown. I don't think I've ever tried his recipes but I am fascinated by the science lessons!
Paula Deen is great too. She looks like she has so much fun in the kitchen, & enjoys what she makes.

I had forgot about that show! I used to come on at about 1 or 2 am here in mountain time land! It was so good. Jaimie Oliver is the chef. In case some of you are wondering why the word "naked" it is because he took foods and tried to accent their natural (naked) flavors or something like that. I believe there is an email at Foodnetwork.com if you want to inquire as to when the show will be back. In London he has received a ton of awards, so I don't know why he's gone.

As a matter of fact, I just sent an email inquiting as to the status of the show. Here's the link if you want to ask as well. Just look to the left under Related Links where is says "THe Naked Chef Email. Click here (http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/show_nc). Also, did you know that he is married with a child? I think it is a daughter, but I am not sure. Most of the shows that I have seen involve him being single.
Rachel Ray is my favorite. I watch her show 30 minute meals almost daily. I have made some of her recipes. I don't have the 30 minutes down pat yet, but I don't do too bad.
I also like Emeril Live , Tyler Florence (I liked his Food 911), and Paula Dean.
I love to watch the challenges they have on FoodNetwork too.

We watch FoodNetwork all the time - but find the emphasis on SW foods and Italian foods boring. We'd love to see someone do a really good French cooking show a la Julia Child! We have her 3 DVDs, but they aren't complete - the entire series of shows isn't available!! {sigh}
DH loves Alton Brown - again because of the science involved. But many of the recipes of his that we have tried have been disappointing because we don't like SW seasoning. He may be Southern, but he doesn't cook Southern! We enjoyed Rachael Ray for a while, but she got "old," and she's exhaustingly "perky." We have a couple of her "30 minute meal" cookbooks, and I really like having an entire meal planned for me!
Paula Deen is fabulous. She cooks Southern, and her foods are without exception (so far) tasty to us. We get her magazine each month.
We'd love to see a Japanese show, or a Russian show. Russian cuisine is very interesting. So is Scandanavian cuisine. Food Network's emphasis on Italian and Southwest US seasonings and foods is turning us "off." They aren't as varied as they should be.
The HGTV channel has some cooking shows, but we tend not to watch them because they conflict with other shows we watch (or DVDs we are watching).

Have you thought about writing to the Food Network to let them know you would be interested in a show or shows that focus on International cooking? I think one show that features different cultures every week would be interesting.
I would be willing to write to them too for you. You never know, if you get enough people to write, maybe they will listen. :)

In my opinion, Martha seems a bit uptight, with most of her guests too. I mean, I know she has to do the show, but have a little personality. And also, she needs a hair cut, with all her money, you'd think she can get a style that doesn't hand in her face all day!!!!!

So what if I mix match my dinner ware! LOL

Cat, the movie did not show her in a good light. It made her out to be a big you-know-what! According to the movie, she was horrible to her guests, except when the cameras were on and horrible to the staff, the sponsors, and everyone else. It kind of made you glad you weren't "perfect."

Hi - haven't checked in for about 6 weeks, so I'm trying to catch up!
Yes, I have posted to the Food Network, but they didn't respond.
DH tried *still another* Alton recipe that was a disaster for us. His science is great, but his spicing leaves us cold (or retching). On the bright side, however, last night DH tried a Paula Deen crab casserole recipe that was wondrous. He's never been much of one for casseroles, so this was a BIIIIIG step for him! LOL!
I like Emeril, but DH goes to bed about 8pm most nights (we get up eeaarly in the mornings), and likes me to at least be making "going to bed" kinds of noises at the same time. I usually sit up and read a loooong time after the light on his side of the bed is out. So, I freqently tape it. We don't have TIVO.

I'm a huge Martha fan. I think that movie was all about sensationalism. If she was really that awful she never would've lasted as long as she has. Not a Rachael Ray fan. I tried watching that one show she had where she ate/cooked with the celebrities but every one I watched she always turned the conversation back around about herself. I really like Paula Dean and Alton Brown.
DeBora4BobbyL

Marie, I am not a big Rachel Ray fan either. I do however, like some of her dishes. As far as the rumors of Martha being so "crabby" I think that the meticulous, artistic, creative types do tend to be moody. But, there isn't anything that woman can't do. lol

I agree with you Deborah. I also think of how I'd behave if everything (jobs, stock prices, etc.) depended solely on me. I'm controlling enough as it is-LOL. After seeing her on the new show, she seems to have loosened up, at least I think so. I've seen her laugh at herself, flirt with the guests and just seem really appreciative that people are still interested in what she has to say after being in jail.
Another chef I like is Tyler Florence. I couldn't remember his name yesterday and then saw him on VH1's "I Love the 70's II" (I'm reliving my youth-LOL). He just seems so relaxed and friendly and has some great ideas.:)

Well I missed the 10:30 show and fell asleep right before it replayed at 1:30 am! So Saturday night I came across the show; I don't know if it was the same episode from Thursday or not, but I got to see it. It was good, although I wouldn't call it a "cooking show" from what I saw. They bake REALLY unusal cakes! One was in the shape of a dog; 3-D mind you. Another was an exact replica of a building at a horse track, another was several tiers; a wedding cake that had all scenes hand painted on in 3-D of events in California the couple had experienced. Another was a bottle of booze in a bed with a blanket on it, a bucket next to it with vomit(for a college girl party). They don't ice them they use fondant on all of them and they showed how they made these cakes into these weird shapes. Then they had to deliver them, and you followed the van through traffic with these cakes in the back and some had to be carried quite a distance once they got there through drunken crowds. I think I'll try to catch it a couple more times, but it isn't anything you're going to get a recipe from, maybe some ideas though.

Haven't heard of that one at all. Is it Jamie Oliver doing it?

I'm so jealous of all of you who get the Food Network! We used to get that channel when we lived in Ohio, but since we moved to a very small town in Wisconsin, it's not on our cable system. Boo!
I watch America's Test Kitchen and Everyday Food on PBS on Saturdays and enjoy both of them very much. I've watched a few of Martha's new format shows -- she's a little more laid back from what I can tell (compared to her former perfectionist style), but she's still Martha.
I also like watching Taste of America on the Travel Channel. The host is Mark DeCarlo and he goes to different towns and samples their specialties, meeting the people who make the food, with some recipes provided. He's pretty entertaining.

Oh Gosh! That would be a bad thing! LOL I watch it quite a bit, but DH doesn't like it very much. He compares it to me watching sports with him! LOL Once in a while he'll watch one here and there though. I haven't seen the ones you were talking about, I'll have to take a peek, thanks for letting us know about those.

Wow! I cannot wait. I hope I remember to look for it. I can set my television to autotune to that channel, but it is too early for it to show up yet. This will be a treat.
Has anyone else seen Nigela's show yet? Has it even started?

I believe that you do have to pay for or get cable to see Foodnetwork. However, I am not sure about the travel channel. I only have watched it to see the poker tournaments. lol We didn't get Foodnetwork for several years when we moved to Carlsbad because the cable company didn't carry it. They started carrying it the last year I was going to school there.

We had cable when we lived in the city and now here in the rural country we have satelite to get reception. We've always had both Foodnetwork and Travel Channel as part of our basic channels( we don't do anything other than the lowest package you can get). It all depends on what "packages" are offered where you live. Luckily those have both been offered to us. I know that FoodNewtork is now offering in our area a HD Foodnetwork, but like I said we only do the basic packages so we won;t be getting it. The satelite company we have now have had "preview" programing since last spring where we get several "free"" premium channels to try and entice us to get more per month. We watch them then, but I'm not willing to pay more for them monthly!
The Great Esacpe with Jamie Oliver that comes on Wednesday!~~ I don't know if it is something new or reruns or even if it is the middle of the show. Just saw that it would be on. Lookinb forward to it, now if I don't forget it! LOL
I love the majority of them on TVFN. Between the Food Network and HGTV I am happy!

Panj, have you ever seen any of Jamie Oliver's cooking shows? I really like him and his cooking methods. He had some on The Travel Channel a while back and I thought I'd finally found him again, but it must have been a one night thing and I missed it!
Just really noticed you are from KY; that is where I grew up and lived till 2002! DH annd I are both from Louisville; moved here to our retirement log home in the woods in 2002.

Jamie Oliver recently, feb(?) last year, brought out his own kitchen utensils, fry pans etc for us to cook great meals like he does, I think I may need a bit more help than that but, I do like some of his books cause the recipes are easy.

I watched the Ministry of Food show by Jamie.
Not a cooking show as such but harking back to post WWII when food was scarce there were women recruited to go around neighbourhoods showing people how to make the most of food rations, being good basic food that anyone could cook and still be healthy and pass on your knowledge.
So Jamie went to this Town in England and asked for I think it was 8 people (men and women) to learn a couple of basic recipes and then go and teach 2 people so they in turn would teach 2 more and before you know it the whole town could cook. Didn't sound hard but ...........
These were people who had take away 5 -7 nights a week, who when asked to cook pasta she said, how can you tell that the water is boiling?
eg this lady who at 15 was pregnant and has had 2 kids before 20yrs old and the boyfriend left her, who'd never cooked for her or her kids, her mother didn't teach her and there fore the cycle continued. She turned out to be brilliant, was his best student then teacher and he actually got her into a chef academy to further studies.
I don't know how it happens but this whole town just didn't cook for their families it was amazing really. I guess there are a lot of people out there that if mum is not there who do you have to teach you? It's probably more prevalent than we think. Was interesting if a bit sad.
That sounds like a terrific show. I hope I can locate it here.
It is amazing how many people still can't cook. I learned mostly from watching mom. But also just trying a recipe. OF course it did help that I had home ec in junior and senior high. Now it is called Tech Ed.
I swear my one sister only learned to cook by reading the back of the package. She never made anything homemade. Nor anything remotely homemade.
Do those people go out to eat every meal?

Oh Coll mys sil is like that if it's not from a box it's from a fast food store LOL
The thing is that is not cheap, it is actually darn expensive to eat like that. We have take away about once maybe twice a fortnight depends .... BUT 5-7 days YIKES!!!!

Not that Emril is on the Planet Green Channel. I really like him the best. I love watching his show from Whole Foods. I have never been in a Whole Foods store. They are putting one near where I work. blessesmomof4, you'll love the new store I think! I always shop in one in the big city when we go back. If you like organic and natural foods, fresh meats and seafood they have a lot. Their prices are rather high over a regular grocery, but for what they have they are reasonable. I especially like their bulk food aisle for my grains and flours. Let me know what you thing once you get to go in!

The series will air on Channel 4 this September and if you want to find out more, check out the press release (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102643264613&s=62754&e=001odJvQXmFkKmmnMQOUo1esQyi9DQgeHzDfQIgGCVTBgXMv Q7FAGHqIopTjKDKToC7c6NLL5JEy0yPhJ7ZceS8b5iJ-zmSMCTcQtwqbWbQEEjCbT1fDs5Mgr1FP3-LfTt7KCJ6Dfim-lMANyNeo6sKTETWPpq1i3Iw). I had a great time making the show and you'll see in the series just how much there was to discover about American food – it's pretty amazing.
As a bit of a treat this month I've included some snaps of my garden (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102643264613&s=62754&e=001odJvQXmFkKl1q9q1sEWk0wHpTMJAfrJNYwDmVQWEGcBTo KQhkc5-kkbPxFlLDAbV7zHsCqUi2CoBA9-QAmi8q9--HU1tIbs4LsS2h667VkSwgdBmDr4YdeRPjAh6xCpG). With all the brilliant weather I've been spending a bit of time picking herbs and veg from the garden to cook with right away – you really can't beat it! I'll try to take some more snaps soon to post on the site (http://rs6.net/tn.jsp?et=1102643264613&s=62754&e=001odJvQXmFkKkNGYNN6LmyzYILutpKZL9Lhq0JfI99alKx4 k5nXnGAWeBVoXiXBd-hEtur1w4MTbNOMD5_NdTGPRN3rziDWX0hrOB4fdniuNLUpMTEV UdLCw==).
