I received a coffee grinder and coffee beans as a gift. I can't wait to use it because I know the coffee will taste great--IF I figure out how to measure it properly.
I already know that when I make coffee from pre-ground beans, I use 3 "measures" (a scoop I always use) for every 5 cups according to the measure on my pot. I don't make a full pot just for myself, just the 5 cups.
But I don't know how many beans to grind to get my 3 scoops of coffee! If I grind too many I'm kind of defeating the purpose of fresh-ground....LOL!
Any hints? Or should I just play around with it until I get it right?

Barb, what about measuring an amount of whole beans first and then put a little at a time in the grinder until you get the amount you need? Then you can look at the amount you used and know how much you need to grind in the future.
I think the approximate amount will depend on the size and quality of the bean. I am also thiknking that because these are fresh beans, you won't have to use as much as you did with the already ground store-bought brands. The reason is that the grinding releases the coffee oils and gases and has been sitting around for awhile on the store's shelf, as well as other places. However, being that you are grinding this fresh, you might find that you will use less and it will taste better.
Barb, I just want to say that I am soooo jealous. I am a coffee connoisseur. I am so picky about my coffee that I won't even use my DHs coffee maker. lol I would love to have my own grinder.
Let us know how it comes out. Maybe someone else will post how they make theirs.

I only grind my own beans, what DeBora said is the way I started off, and the bean size makes a little difference ,but I never find them to much different. Grind a few and measure and then that can be your guide till you get it the way you want. If you happen to grid too much freeze what you do';t use in that pot and it keeps it just as fresh. Don't buy the beans too much ahead either, but if you do need to ( I do in the winter or if I find a really good deal on them), I freeze the whole beans; has always worked and then they are fresh when I need them.
I've looked at the coffeepot that grinds them and then makes a pot of coffee right from them, but the last time I looked it was way too expensive for me to justify it~~~yet! LOL
