This subject came up over at Family Corner. I personally dislike instant mashed potatoes very much. However, some ppl say there are some interesting things you can do with instant mashed potatoes.
Do you know of some creative or interesting things that can be done with instant mashed potatoes and want to share them?

I got a recipe from a lady a couple years ago for her wonderful mashed potaoes; turns out they were instant! Here is the reipe she gave me and it is really good; the one thing though you MUST use potato BUDS, not flakes, seems that is the difference!
Betty Crocker Potato Buds
1 can evaported milk
1/2 cup mayonnaise (not miracle whip, but real mayonnasie)
1 stick butter
Mix potato buds using evaported milk in place of regular milk ,add rest of ingredients and they are the best tasting "instant mashed potatoes" you've ever had!
I keep regular instant mashed potato flakes in my pantry because in a pinch they're okay and they make a wonderful thckener in foods instead of cornstarch. And you can also in a pinch make cream of potato soup with them.
For someone not feeling well and you need to get something down in them a bowl of instant mashed potatoes is filling.
And also they make a great food to take backpacking when you have to be concerned about the weight issue. You can take powdered cheese, powdered instant mashed potatoes, powdered milk, add the water at camp and have a bowl of cheesey potato soup! They also make a good filler with other backpacking meals.

I think I would have to get past the idea of all that mayo. lol I'm sure it makes it tastes really good and if I didn't know it was in there, I probably wouldn't know it. lol

I don't care for instant mashed potatoes either, but my daughter-in-law gave me this idea and it tasts great. when making your potatoes add a pkg. of dry ranch salad dressing mix. If you are making a small amount use less than a pkg. It tastes great! You may have to add just a little milk to get the desired consistancy. We use Idahoian Real Premium instant mashed potatoes. I imagine any kind would work, however. Good luck.

I wonder if things can be done with instant potatoes other than making mashed potatoes?

I would imagine you could make potato cakes out of them - add spring onions, tuna etc and fry in a little oil.
How about using them instead of wallpaper paste???!!!

I've done a little bit of a search and so far I've only found LOTS of recipes for different mashed potatoes using them and some casseroles, but they are all still mashed potatoes! LOL

I was going to post about using it for wallpaper paste, too! Actually, it works for papier maché, same idea. Also, and I am totally serious here, it's a great finger-painting medium with a drop of food coloring for toddlers. You wouldn't want to save the "paintings for long, as it might attract bugs, but it's good for the Process Art Experience, which is what you want with little ones of that age, anyway.
I don't care for instant mashed potatoes, don't even eat potatoes at all (I'm a low-carber) but I used to use it occasionally to thicken soups and gravies.

It works as well as using dried bread crumbs, you can cook them longer if they aren't as crispy as you like, but I've used this on chicken before and it worked well. It reminds me of using shake n bake.

I wondered if it was like Shake and Bake. Cool!

Combine 1 envelope Good Seasons Italian salad dressing mix (dry) with approx. 3/4 C instant potato flakes & 2 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese. Dip chicken pieces in melted butter, then into seasoned flakes. Bake in greased pan until chicken is done. Bone-in takes longer than boneless/skinless b**bs. Turn chicken pieces over when half done. A 3-4 lb. fryer takes at least 1 hr. to bake at 350. About 40 minutes for standard boneless breasts.

use mashed potato flakes to bake potato rolls or potato bread, instead of cooking taters.

Sounds good! I do use the instant mashed potao flakes in my potato bread I make in the bread machine, taste good; nobody is the wiser, and love the "quickness" it adds to making potato bread!
I add them to any of my cream based soups or even stews to thicken them up so I don't have lumps...but other than that I'm not lucky enough to get away with making "fake" mashed potatoes.

I "doctor" them, up quite a bit and they come pretty close to the real thing! LOL
