1 cup sugar 6 eggs, separated 1 cup molasses 4 cups all-purpose flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground allspice 1 tsp ground cinnamon 1 tsp ground cloves 1 tsp ground nutmeg 8 oz commercial sour cream 1 tsp baking soda Powdered sugar Cream butter; gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add egg yolks and molasses, beating well. Combine flour, salt, and spices; mix well. Combine sour cream and baking soda; mix well. Add flour mixture to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream mixture, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Beat egg whites (at room temperature) until stiff peaks form; gently fold into batter. Pour batter into a greased and floured 10-inch tube pan. Bake at 300 degrees F. for 1 hour and 40 minutes or until cake tests done. Cool in pan 10 minutes; remove from pan and cool completely. Sprinkle with powdered sugar. Yield: one 10-inch cake.
