Bread Pudding with Lemon Sauce

2 cups 1 inch dry bread cubes
4 cups milk, scalded
1Tblsp butter
1/4 tsp salt
3/4 cup sugar
4 slightly beaten eggs
1 tsp vanilla

Soak bread cubes in hot milk 5 minutes. Add butter, salt and sugar. Pour slowly over beaten eggs; add vanilla and mix well. Pour into greased baking dish. Bake in pan of hot water in moderate oven (350 degrees) until firm, about 50 minutes. Serve with lemon sauce (below). Add 1/2 cup seeded raisins, if desired.
Serves 8.

Lemon Sauce

1/2 cup sugar
1Tblsp cornstarch
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp nutmeg
1 cup boiling water
2 Tblsps butter
2 Tblsps lemon juice

Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt and nutmeg; gradually add water, and cook over low heat until thick and clear. Add butter and lemon juice; blend thoroughly.
