Dutch Spice Cake

1 cup brown sugar
half cup shortening
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. baking soda
half cup molasses
half cup cold water
2 cups flour
1 tsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. salt

Sauce:
2 cups brown sugar
1 T. flour
2 cups hot water
2 T. butter
2 tsp. vanilla

Preheat oven to 300F. Grease a 7 ½" x 11 ¼" pan. Cream sugar and
shortening; add eggs. Stir soda into molasses; add to mixture.
Blend in water. Sift together flour and spices; add to mixture. Pour
into pan and bake 40 minutes.

Mix brown sugar and flour; add water. Cook over medium heat until
mixture thickens. Remove from heat; add butter and vanilla. Serve
over hot cake.
