Chicago Deep-dish Pizza

Click here for a printable version of this recipe

1 lb. loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
4 c. shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
1 lb. lean pork sausage, browned and drained
1 1/2 tsp. oregano
2 - 3 cups spaghetti sauce
1/2 c. fresh sliced mushrooms
1/4 c. parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Press dough into bottom and up the sides of pan. Sprinkle bottom of crust with 3 cups of mozzarella cheese. Crumble sausage over cheese. Top with oregano, spaghetti sauce, mushrooms, parmesan cheese and remaining mozzarella cheese. Place in 500 degree oven; immediately reduce heat to 400 degrees. Bake 30 – 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Note: The original recipe called for 3 cans of plum tomatoes, chopped and drained, but my kids won’t eat tomatoes like that, so I used some spaghetti sauce. Turned out great!
