Old-Fashioned Stack Cake

3/4 c. shortening or butter
1 c. each: sugar, molasses, and buttermilk
4 c. self-rising flour
1 t. each lemon juice and vanilla
3 eggs
1/2 t. each ginger, allspice and cloves
Apple Butter (or Applesauce) for filling

Cream shortening (or butter) and sugar; blend well. Blend in Molasses, thoroughly. Add eggs 1 at a time, stirring well after each egg. Add milk and dry ingredients alternately (mix will be stiff). Divide into 6 balls. Place each ball into an 8-inch greased and floured cake pan. Pat out to fill pan (flour hands to do this).Bake at 350-degrees for 18 minutes. Remove from pans while still warm and allow to cool completely. To assemble the stack cake layer cakes and apple butter (or applesauce) then cover entire cake with apple butter for frosting. Let stand,tightly covered for 2 days to allow flavor to completely soak into the cake.
