Almond-Meringue Shortbreads

2 cups flour,
2 eggs--separated,
1/2 cup sugar,
1/4 teaspoon salt,
3/4 cup margarine or butter--softened,
1/2 cup chopped slivered almonds,
1/2 cup raspberry or strawberry jam or jelly,
1/3 cup sugar,
1/2 cup slivered almonds
Heat oven to 400 degrees. Mix flour, egg yolks, 1/2 cup sugar, the salt, margarine and 1/2 cup chopped almonds (dough will be very stiff). Press dough into ungreased 9 x 9 x 2 inch pan. Bake until edges are light brown--15 to 20 minutes; cool slightly. Spread with jam. Beat egg whites until foamy. Beat in 1/3 cup sugar gradually; continue beating until stiff and glossy. Spread meringue over jam; sprinkle with 1/2 cup clivered almonds. Bake 8 to 10 minutes--until meringue is light brown. Cool slightly; cut into 1 1/2 inch squares.
